x22 ethernet, network controller driver
Hi, I have a X22 that I am running XP SP2 on. After installing the usual drivers from IBM, I still have 2 "yellow question marks" under Device Manager/Other devices. One is listed as Ethernet Controller, the other is listed as Network Controller. I've downloaded and installed/tried every Ethernet/Network driver I can find under the X22 driver matrix, including the soft modem ones, but nothing "fits". I checked the X2* HMM, opened the KB up and verified that I do have a Mini PCI 802.11x board and a CDC (Communications Daughter Card), I am assuming the complaint is with the CDC, does anybody happen to know what the deal with the CDC driver is ? Thanks.

That should be what you need for the Ethernet NIC.
As you stated that you also have wireless, here's the driver for that:

Make sure that you read and follow the install intructions on the given pages - simply downloading and extracting the files is NOT enough.

Thanks. Unfortunately, that's one of the drivers that I've tried. No, I did not just extract them, but no match were found when I directed the install to the driectory (even directed the install through every single folder). What is curious is in contrary to IBM' driver document, which indicates this supports XP, if one looks into all the files extracted, there is no XP system file or folder), one can see the W98, NT, W2K, system files and folders, but nothing for XP. Any more ideas will be greatly appreciated.
for the wireless, the w2k and wxp drivers are the same, and on my wife's machine they extracted to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\WLLANACT\ -- see if you have a setup.exe in that folder and try it if you do.
The intel 100/VE ethernet which is what both of our x2*s have should be detected and working fine with the drivers built into win XP. I think some of them might have different cards, though. try going to windows update and seeing if there's anything about it under the optional hardware stuff. the only drivers I've had to install on these with XP are the wireless and the radeon video drivers, everything else has just worked.

Hi, thanks for all the input, I am consolidating the two threads into one here, and here's what I have so far:
1. I did try all the drivers suggested here, "basically" all return with not finding the software for the hardware.
2. Detecting hardware seems a bit "spotty", for a while, I was getting detection of Network Adapter, and Network controller or Ethernet controller, but now I am no longer getting any detect with Network Adapter, may have something to do with I am now using a PCCard (tried an AT&T G and Asante G, both work flawlessly). Currently, I am only seeing one single yellow ?, a Network Controller.
3. For some unknown reason, when I was retrying all the drivers again last night, I was able to install one of the Intel Pro1000 drivers, but the device cannot start, so much for that. After I unstalled the driver, I was not able to reinstall it again.
4. I am starting to wonder if the Mini PCI is indeed a G, the prior owner may just happened to have an Actiontec G driver that worked to a limited extend, He was using a PCcard for day to day stuff (he thought the reception of the internal card wasn't that good).
5. Looking up the machine number (22629EX) and serial, this was apparently a Japan origin machine, may account for some of the different network "guts".
6. I took some pictures (unfortunately, some of them have real bad "flash" reflection), may be some people can recognize the parts? The CDC looks "normal" (says CDC Ether on it), the mini PCI is not something I recognize, but apparently it is Texas Instrument, antenna appears good, there is, however, an unused white connector.

yep, i can't help identify that card but i can tell you that it for sure isn't the same as the factory wireless card in my x23, which has a green pcb and a metal covering over most of it. I'd bet that card was most likely installed by a previous owner.
we have: X23 2662-EDU, X22 2662-9EU, Gateway 2500 junker
Yes, pretty much everything I've see so far is a green PCB with everything "covered". As it looks like Mini PCI Wifi's are quite plentiful and not that expensive these days, I may just go ahead and get one to try it, but before that, a few more questions:
1. Does the antenna connection just snap/pull off (I need higher magnification glasses to work on this
), or does it take any special tools?
2. Will the CDC work if I just physically remove the Mini PCI (is it supposed to) ?
3. Any warnings/gotyas for getting a wifi PCI Mini ?
BTW, the X22 is actually quite nice, I am using it the same way I use my X20, T21, Transnote.., with a PCcard Wifi, but it just bugs me that there are things in there that I couldn't figure out
.. Thanks folks.

yes, the antenna connectors just snap on and off, they can be a bit tricky to line up to get back on but they just snap in, no tools needed. it's easier if you attach them before you plug the card into the motherboard. I would think the CDC should work fine regardless of the status of the mini-pci, but i'm not sure, if I get some time later i'll try pulling my wireless card and and seeing if the CDC ethernet still works.
