ThinkPad 240 Max RAM
What is the Max RAM for the ThinkPad 240? I have the latest bios version. I think it was 300MB. Is there a way the ThinkPad 240 can handle up to 512MB RAM? that would make it better. And has anyone tryed upgrading the processor? mine is a Intel Celeron 300MHz. If it ties in with the Pentium IIIs I'd like to get a 700MHz or even a 1GHz processor. Its slow because it has only 64MB RAM in it running Windows XP Professional.
Also would a built-In WiFi card work in my 240 on the Mini PCI. not sure if it has a Mini PCI as I never took my 240 apart. but I heard the 570 can be upgraded to a built-In WiFi.

Re: ThinkPad 240 Max RAM
The 240 came with 64MB PC-66 memory standard, max 192MB (official), 320MB (unofficial).
It has the Intel 440DX controller chip which supports Intel Mobile Celeron 300, 366 or 400 CPU.
I've never tried, but you might be able to replace the modem with a wifi card in the mini-PCI slot. There is probably some one around here who has done it, or at least tried.

Re: ThinkPad 240 Max RAM
The procesor is not removable in the 240/240x/240z - it's soldered onto the mainboard (a guy from my technical university who bought my 240x tried to find a faster BGA procesor, but he faild to do so).
As for the WiFI - it can be done with almost no problems - what you need is to find a mini-PCI in a smaller, 3b form factor (look for the Intel PRO WIRLESS WM3B2200bg or TP-Link TL-WN360G). The problem is to place the antenas - I put them in the LCD assembly, but there is very little room for them.

Re: ThinkPad 240 Max RAM
The same thing as my ThinkPad 560X i guess, its Processor is solder to the board too. would a 256MB RAM work in it or does it need 2 128MB RAM. Is there 2 slots or 1?

The 240 has one memory slot. And according to thinkwiki, "Any PC100 256MB memory in 16-chip configuration" will do. So you need to look for a low-density SD-RAM memory module. They are available, but they aren't cheap.

Re: ThinkPad 240 Max RAM
According to the "cheap PC133 RAM for the 600X" thread, and some eBay sellers, (of course I believe everything they say
) there may be such a thing as 8 chip low density RAMs.
We already know it's possible to replace the soldered in 64Mb with 128Mb for a total of 384Mb; would it be possible - assuming the rumored 256Mb chips exist, and someone who can solder better than me can find them, to upgrade the 240 to 512Mb?

However, I would still recommend that if you are looking for a "low density" 256MB PC100/PC133 module, that you stick with 16-chip versions as they are virtually guaranteed to be compatible.

I was only thinking of the replacement chips for the motherboard. Maybe if someone has an 8 chip low density module in another machine, they could try it in their 240, and if it works, let us know the chip numbers?
