X41 with dead battery -- shouldn't it still power up?

#1 Post by selrak » Tue Mar 09, 2010 6:28 pm

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but I can't find a definitive answer.

I have an X41, a couple of years old, with an 8-cell battery. It has been used very little, and the battery appears to be dead.

When I try to plug the tablet into AC with the standard adaptor, I get mixed results. With the battery installed, it sometimes powers up; other times, it shows a brief sign of wanting to come to life, albeit with the flashing orange battery icon going -- and then *click* goes dead.

When I try using the adaptor with the battery fully removed, I get no signs of power whatsoever.

If the battery is well and truly dead, should the tablet still not power up, assuming all is well with the power supply, and the tablet itself?

Also, is it to be expected that it won't function at all if the battery is removed, and the ac adaptor alone is used?

Or is this a sign that there are bigger problems, e.g., logic board, etc.

Have to invest 50 bucks in a battery just to find out the tablet is now useless.

thanks in advance....

The answer to your question is, yes the laptop should power up with just the AC adapter and no battery installed. Check the output of the AC adapter with a multimeter. It should be 16VDC, center pin to shield.
