What is the Maximum Size HDD for a TP R50 1830-DM0?

#1 Post by csouter » Wed Mar 10, 2010 7:40 pm

Hi, all!

Greetings from Sydney, Australia!

The subject pretty much says it all.

I've just bought an IBM ThinkPad R50, Type 1830-DM0 on eBay.

It has a 40GB HDD, presumably IDE, which I would like to upgrade to a larger one.

I see from the IBM website that the machines came with 40GB, 60GB or 80GB drives.

Does anyone know if this machine could take, say, a 120GB or a 160GB drive?

Here is the BIOS info:
BIOS Version: 3.06f (1RETCDWW)
BIOS Date: 2004-06-18
Embedded Controller Version: 3.02

If you need any more info, just PM me.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best regards to all

You are only limited by the size of IDE drive available, and I believe that would be 320GB.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

Hi,

Thanks for your reply!

So, do you mean that the BIOS would recognise any size IDE HDD, regardless of its size, even over the 128GiB limitation?

I was just wondering whether the BIOS might need an update to be able to recognise HDDs above 137GB (128GiB).

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks and regards

There is no (known) BIOS limit on R50 machines, so you can go ahead and upgrade, I've had 250GB in R50p at one time, and the BIOS is the same one, shared amongst all ATi-based R50/R51 units.
