New to this Board, processor upgrade
New to this Board, processor upgrade
And I am very happy to find so much information on my computer. I have a T60, with a T2300 1.66Ghz processor with 4G of Ram (it was cheaper to buy 2 2G chips) and a 500G Harddrive. I want to upgrade my processor and I really want to go to a T7600 if I can. I want to keep this laptop until I can afford a W series laptop.
No, I have not gotten my palm rest re-installed properly. The bottom edge of it is totally loose. Whats the secret?
In any case can I upgrade this computer to a T7600 processor (or should I go to a T7400)?. The serial number tag has worn off the bottom of the computer or at least I dont think it's there?
My next question is, is there any way to get a blue tooth receiver into this computer that will work with a gps receiver?
Next, is there away to get a video out to a non HD TV. I have a Sony that has component input jacks.
Finally, is there away to use the fingerprint scanner to log into websites?

Re: New to this Board, processor upgrade
Welcome to the Forum.
Start with downloading the Manual (HMM we call it):
Standard 4:3: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-62733
Widescreen: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-66958
Find in there how to attach the palmrest properly. (you are probably missing some screws, available for a few $$ on eBay).
I would rather go for the T7200, which is powerful enough at 2.0GHz, and less expensive.
If you have ATI graphics, you may need the proper fan/cooler 41W6407 (you may have it already).
If you hit F1 at bootup, it'll go into BIOS, where you can see the Type and Serial number on the first BIOS screen.
It will look like: 2008CTO9912345 where the bold part is the type 2008-CTO and 99-12345 is the Serial No.
Let us know what you have, so we can advise you better.
As to bluetooth, does you machine have it already or not? Connectivity also depends on the BT protocol you use.
The port replicator you got, should have component video out, IIRC, or else get a DVI/component or VGA/component adapter.
And yes, you can use the FPR to log into websites. You may not have all the proper drivers installed.
Run System Update, but check first that you have Version 3.14 for Windows XP/Vista, or 4.0 for W7.

Re: New to this Board, processor upgrade
I have a new problem but let me share the pertinent information
Bios 2.20 (79ETE0WW)
bios date 2007-12-07
s/n 1953DAUL3BN065
Board serial number VF0R472S1VM
CPU T2300
Speed 1.66Ghz
Now.All of a sudden my track pad has stopped working, the trackpoint has stopped working and all of the mouse click buttons have stopped working. The finger print scanner still works.
The keyboard would work on MS Word but not online.
I checked to see if track pad connector was connected and it was. I swapped the old harddrive back in to see if it could be a virus but the only thing that changed was now my my wifi utility wont work. I got the computer used so I dont have any restore disk.
what can i do?
Sent from my wife's S10. Boy I hate this keyboard

You may run some Linux LiveCD and see if the touchpoint works. Disconnect external mice. Reset settings to default in BIOS. If this does not help, it's a hardware problem
760ED -> 600X -> T22 -> T41 -> T42 -> T60

Re: New to this Board, processor upgrade
This is what came from the factory:
Product: ThinkPad T60 1953-DAU [change]
Operating system: All [change]
Original description: T2300E(1.66GHz), 512MB RAM, 60GB 5400rpm HD, 15in 1024x768 LCD, Intel 950, CDRW/DVD, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro
There are no Component outputs on a dock, nor on a port replicator, for the T6x.
But you could get one of these VGA->component converters:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/produ ... 1&format=2
Alternatively, get a TV with a VGA (for direct) or DVI-D input (for via dock/replicator).
As to your keyboard problems:
first off, the idiot who designed/placed the angled KB-connector on the T60 motherboard deserves to be shot!
Check that your cable is properly connected. Reconnect it just in case.

Re: New to this Board, processor upgrade
Can I upgrade my processor? I was planning on buying a new palm rest trackpad assembly cause mine is cracked. But the track point isn't working either.
To reset the bios thingy do i just select the factory default setting. I am semi computer literate

Re: New to this Board, processor upgrade
Yes, you can upgrade your CPU (to Intel Core2Duo T7200/T7400/T7600).
The trackpoint is an integrated part of the keyboard. Try reseating that KB cable.
Also check that all your drivers are up-to-date.
Run SystemUpdate 3.14 for XP/Vista, or 4.0 for W7.
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 62928.html
And get PC Doctor to check your laptop, especially keyboard/trackpoint.
At bootup hit F1 to go into BIOS, when you are in, press F9 for defaults, then F10 to save and exit.

Re: New to this Board, processor upgrade
I am too glad that I can upgrade the processor! For some reason my wifi wont act right now either. I have a phone that I can tether to the laptop ad hoc computer to computer... that is the only connection that will show up. I have done the F1, F9 to reset and then F10 thing to try and reset the BIOS but I am never quite sure if it has done it. I hit F9 and nothing happens.
I cloned the 500Gb drive from the original 60Gb drive. Should I put the original drive back into the computer? I think I checked the cable, I disconnected it and reconnected it. Now I have the keyboard reinstalled pretty much correctly. The side with the crack, just to the left of the left mouse button is still loose, but the rest of it is tight.
I am running system mechanic on the computer right now, hoping it will repair the problem.
Now to be honest I did install a piece of software, maybe friday morning that said, this may disable the use of your keyboard will it is installing. It could have been, in reverse order, app remover, hotspot shield, a2 free, or threat fire. In addition to this adaware free was acting crazy saying that there was some file that it could not download from the internet. I reinstalled adaware and then completely uninstalled it. While it was stuck, not even revo uninstaller would take it out
What is the default administrator password on this computer... in case i get stuck there

Re: New to this Board, processor upgrade
There is no default administrator password. Either you (or the previous owner) set one, or there is none.
Check the password settings in BIOS, if all are disabled, you're fine.
You need to wait till you are in BIOS, before you hit F9/F10.
BTW, if the touchpad is defective, it also takes the trackpoint down.
Either disconnect the touchpad (under the palmrest), or disable the touchpad in BIOS.
The trackpoint should then work again.
Check in System/Device Manager if you have any yellow or red marks for non-working devices.
You may need to (re)load the wifi drivers.

There's also the tricky little wireless radios switch on the front edge of the computer.

I am also getting a found PCI device message. But the driver for it isn't there and the computer cant find it. Is this PCI device the track pad?

track point works with palmrest detached!

Re: New to this Board, processor upgrade
Reinstall the BIOS? From what I can gather the PCI is for a card reader... except my computer doesnt have a card reader. I had a usb bluetooth dongle in it for awhile but I have taken in out.
It is starting seem like my BIOS maybe having issues, cause I am trying to make this work with 2 different copies of my operating system on 2 different drives.
If it could be the BIOS, how could I reinstall it?

Re: New to this Board, processor upgrade
There is one serious negative effect on the 2.25 BIOS - USB peripherals don't work during boot (e.g. cannot access BIOS/DOS with a USB keyboard).
It has been reported and documented multiple times, and I don't think it has been fixed, or can be fixed without a new BIOS.
Stay with 2.23.

Re: New to this Board, processor upgrade
I am still not sure about how to install the new BIOS. Do I just run the exe file?
Re: New to this Board, processor upgrade
there are two installer versions...
one is an 'exe' that you invoke from within windows.
the other is an 'iso' that you burn to cd and then boot from it.
either way, be sure that you have a fully charged battery installed and that you are running on ac power.
personally, i always use the bootable cd method and i've never had a problem yet.
