Z60T freeze problems

#1 Post by Aelon » Fri Mar 12, 2010 5:35 pm

OK I could use your help tracking down a couple of freeze issues with my laptop. I do not know if any of them are related or not.

Basically, here are a list of situations where it is sure to freeze:

* Anything involving 3D, including the Compiz Cube in Linux, and the Direct3d tests in DXDialog. (Minor irritation, i can live without games on this machine)
* Starting the Lenovo Power Manager (I initially thought it was because the battery in this machine was Dead Dead Dead, it turns out that isnt the problem. Interestingly enough, the ThinkVantage Toolbox is able to query the battery just fine with PM installed and not running)
* Going into Standby (as in suspend to RAM)

I have triggered a freeze, restarted and checked the Windows Logs and cannot see any warnings or alerts around the times of the freeze, so the freeze seems to occur before windows knows anything is amiss.

You mentioned Compiz, does stand-by in Linux work?

No. Suspend to RAM in either OS leads to a completely unresponsive machine with a black screen with a tiny white cursor top left. And if i turn it off by holding power button and then turn it off, it doesnt POST until i turn it off and on again.

Hibernate/suspend to Disk works fine.

I'd start by running a full battery of PC-Doctor tests on the Z60T.

Also run memtest86 on it.

Memtest 86+ (86 is obsolete, and 86+ comes with my Linux distro) found nothing when I ran it on this machine back when I first got it. Most of these problems were evident then.

I ran the quick test of PC Doctor, it only squawked at the lack of dialtone for the modem (not connected to a phone line)

I ran the more intensive tests on the usual suspects (CPU, RAM, Battery, Graphics) Graphics test caused a freeze at the Full Transform and Lighting test.

~Not surprising, with its freeze on 3D, i suspected that might trigger it.

Well, you have a hardware problem. Just to eliminate heat, run tpfancontrol and tell us your CPU and GPU temps at full load.

I don't see a GPU temp, so I'd assume that tpfancontrol can't read it. All other temps look normal. I think you need a new systemboard.

One last thing...have you tried running the machine with the battery removed?

Yeah before I replaced the battery I ran it batteryless. still freeze on standby. Wasnt bad, I could set it to 'always on' PSMode then.

Your machine has Intel graphics, which are not prone to difficulties normally.
They share RAM, so it might be a RAM problem.
OTOH, take off the front palm rest, then try pressure on various corners of the big Intel chip there (Southbridge).
Maybe that's becoming loose?
