600E PIII Upgrade Boot Issue With Powerleap CPU CP

#1 Post by miradiem » Fri Mar 12, 2010 6:34 pm

After installing the Powerleap CPU utility in Windows XP on my 600E I keep getting an error message reading "Cannot Load Ring 0 Component. The message is displayed immediately after windows finishes booting up and the L2 cache does not initiate. I must then open the utility manually to start th e L2 cache. What can be done to have the cache forced on at start up. Thanks.

I don't know what causes that error, but someone else on the forum also had this same problem:

One option might be to try a different version of the PowerLeap cache utility. I have one that I've been using on one of my 770Z's under XP SP2 without problems. If you would like to try it, then send me private message with your email address and I'll send it along.

The version I am using used to be available through one of the PowerLeap websites, but they have removed it for some reason.

On my 600E PIII 500 XP pro SP3 I use another program to enable L2 cache.
It is called: CPUMSR L2 cache enabler.

Thanks for the help. For some unknown reason the utility stopped posting the error and starts properly. I will observe it's operation for awhile. Again, thanks for the help.

Glad it seems to be working now. I wonder if the problem was caused by some kind of conflict with other startup programs (in your Startup folder, Run registry, RunOnce registry, RunServices)? The order that things get run by Windows can be something of a mystery, but there is a Startup Control Panel applet that allows you to control which items are run. If someone else runs into this issue, then it might be worth trying to fiddle with those settings.

Startup Control Panel from Mike Lin:

(Note: I have not personally tested this under XP SP3, but it works great under XP SP2).
