How do I clean my screen without getting any streaks??
Hi there all, I need some advice on how to clean my screen without getting any streaks. I use filtered water dabbed on a lens cloth which gets rid of any marks etc perfectly but it does leave streaks. If anyone can recommend some products/methods etc, it would be much appreciated.
Oh yeah, i dont trust myself with alcahol - as in i might damage the screen! - so all other methods please...
James.

Get yourself over to wherever one purchases eyeglasses on the cheap, over here that would be WalMart or one of the other "big box" stores.
Purchase a bottle of their eyeglass cleaning solution. All of these are specially formulated for cleaning plastic lenses, which is key as the covering on your LCD is plastic, not glass. The solution one gets at WalMart over here comes with a handy "pocket size" spray bottle and a larger refill bottle which WalMart will refill for free.
Now for the critical part. You need a 3M micro-fiber wiping cloth. These are sold in almost all camera shops, but can usually be found for half the price or less in the cleaning supplies aisle of your local supermarket.
Spray some of the eyglass solution on the 3M cloth, not the display, and have at your display. Once it's cleaned to your satisfaction it should only need an occasional wipe with the dry 3M cloth to remove even the most stubborn fingerprint.
Regards,
James

I like James' suggestion however I've always had good results with plain old rubbing alcohol diluted to approximately 50% with water ... and a lint-free towel. I have a Radtech Screensavrx I use for regular polishing. Works great.

You need not worry about alcohol damaging the screen as long as you choose the right type.
As far as I know Isopropyl alcohol (90% or better) will not damage the coating on an LCD display. I remember reading somewhere that Apple recommends cleaning powerbook displays with a solution of 50% isoprop and 50% water. I've used this and it works reasonably well, with no streaks left behind.
Just make sure you use a cloth that is designed to wipe displays and not scratch them.

I use something called Monitor Lizard. They don't list the ingredients but it workd perfectly on my LCD and on CRTs. I second the advice to get a microfiber cloth. You can pick them up at any optician.
The only place I found it was on this website- I don't advocate the other stuff the sell (you will see what I mean if you go there)

For the benefit of anyone from the UK, it is seemingly impossible to find the 3M microfibre cloth anywhere including the internet, I have only ever seen the spray. If anyone does know where us Islanders can find it, please post!

I've seen them in one or another of those computer "Boutiques" on High Street in London, but IIRC they were something like 20 or 25 quid each!!James314 wrote:For the benefit of anyone from the UK, it is seemingly impossible to find the 3M microfibre cloth anywhere including the internet, I have only ever seen the spray. Cleaning the laptop
Hi All,
I recently bought a T42 2373 6VU and it was helpful to go through the FAQs and recent topics posted on this forum. I bought a Klear screen, screen cleaner starter kit from my univeristy bookshop. Has anyone ever used it? Though the bottle with the liquid says ammonia and alcohol free but being a first time owner of this laptop I am apprehensive to use it.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers

3M Microfiber Product Choices
In terms of cleaning my T42's screen, is there any noticable advantage choosing the 3M Microfiber Notebook Computer Cleaning Cloth over the 3M Lens Cleaning Cloth, or are they virtually identical (all in the marketing)?
Being located in Kazakhstan at the moment, it's much easier (and cheaper) for me to have family pick up the Lens cloth, as the Notebook cloth seems much less readily available.
Thanks in advance,
Scott

Hi James,
I went out shopping a few days ago and I found the "3M ScotchBrite High Performance Cleaning Cloth" (11" x 12")
Specifications - CAT # 9026-Intl 34-8506-3532-6. Fabrication: 80%polyester, 20% nylon. Made in Korea
I was wondering if this item is the same as the microfber cloth that you refer to for cleaning laptop screens. Please advice.
Cheers and best regards,
Ranjit

Hi James,
Thank you for your response.
I am glad I got the "right" stuff!. Now, on the packing it says: unique micro-texture - cleans without sprays and polishes. In your earlier post you say that the cleaning should be done by spraying some "eyeglass cleaning solution" onto the cloth. Should this procedure be done only once to remove the subborn stains and/or fingerprints and the cloth alone for regular upkeep? Please advice.
By the way, is this cloth non-abrasive and lint-free?
Cheers and best regards,
Ranjit

Ranjit,
Yes, just spray the cloth lightly with a benign solution such as eyeglass cleaner, then scrub the display clean.
After that the dry cloth alone will serve to remove the daily smutch the screen acquires, including fingerprints.
Yes, it's non-abrasive and lint free.

I have had great results using some of these products, especially the Mini Wipe and the screen protector: http://www.shaggymac.com//index.php?mai ... ex&cPath=2
