T22 Fan Recommendation

#1 Post by Majestic » Sat Mar 13, 2010 2:59 pm

I've got a question regarding the correct heatsink/fan for one of my ThinkPads. A while back I had replaced the motherboard in my T20 with a T22 2647 GU2 board. The original T20 board suffered from the 0175 POST error. During the board replacement I reused the T20 heatsink on the T22 board. I'm now wondering if that was a good idea as I was monitoring the temperature using the HWMonitor utility from CPUID's website and noticed the temp will spike into the upper 80's(c) under a heavy load. On average the temperature stays in the mid 50's and I have never had any thermal shut downs or any unexplained shut downs for that matter.

My questions...

What would be a good heatsink to put on the board if it is indeed running hot and I am using the wrong heatsink? The T22 service manual shows that 26P9317 in the recommended part, but I recall a past forum discussion that the heatsink from a T23 would fit other T2x models.

Is there a better temperature monitoring utility than what I am using? At this point I really don't know how compatible that utility is with older IBM hardware and if the readings are accurate.

Any input will be most appreciated.

T23 coolers will not work/fit in a T20/21/22.
The best one for a T22 is P/N 26P9317.
Make sure you have proper thermal paste between CPU and cooler.

Thanks for your reply RBS and confirmation on the correct part. I'll head over to E-Bay to see what is available.

As for the thermal paste, I've been using Arctic Silver Ceramic on my previous builds. I'm assuming that will be more than adequate for this job as well.

Thanks again.

THIS is the one you want. As you can see I was looking for one also.

I got one off eBay but have not seen that price since

bonestonne here on the forum offered me one, you might try him.

Thanks micl9 for the reply. I was able to picked up a 26P9317 heatsink/fan on E-Bay yesterday for a total of $8. The seller has a track record of quick shipping so I am hoping that it gets here before I send the T22 back to college with the youngest at the end of Spring break.
