T60 v T43: HUGE difference in screen clarity?

#1 Post by Skysurfer » Sat Mar 13, 2010 4:30 pm

Hi,

I have been using a T43 for some time now and recently started using a friend's T60 and noticed a HUGE difference in screen resolution. Why would the T60 look so soft compared to the clear, sharp text and images on the T43? I've tried all the various display settings in Display Properties, but the T60s fuzziness wont go away.

This is no trivial difference. And I'm not sure whether it's a defective LCD or whether that's just standard on a T60.

Is the T60 in need of repair???

What is the machine type/model from the bottom sticker on the T43? I am willing to bet it has an IPS Flexview LCD given your reaction to a normal TFT LCD on a T60.

Harry,

The T43 is 2686-DGU.

I sense from your reply that this T43 screen is tough to come by now a-days? Is there anything comparable in one of the higher-performing Thinkpad lines?

from the ltwbook.pdf, a 2686-DGU comes back as 14.1" SXGA+ (14.1" (358.1mm) SXGA+ (1400x1050) TFT color / Active Matrix / 150 nits)... non-IPS/flexview. the 15" dju and m7u, 15" sxga+ models, were ips/flexview equipped.

what was the native panel resolution on the t60? model-type?

I have a 14 inch SXGA+ T60 (2613-CTO) for work and the screen does look soft. On the other hand our 15 inch SXGA+ T60 (2623-DCU) is IPS and looks very bright and contrasty.

Hi,

The T60 type is 2007-49U. Is that a model with an inferior LCD? Native resolution...what is that?

this may help: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... ry=200749U

Product: ThinkPad T60 2007-49U [change]
Operating system: All [change]
Original description: T2400(1.83GHz), 512MB RAM, 60GB 5400rpm HD, 14.1in 1400x1050 LCD, 64MB ATI Radeon X1300, CDRW/DVD, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

so, non-ips/flexview.

native lcd resolution is the actual # of pixels. in the case of the both the t43 and t60 you mention, it's 1400x1050.

Both screens have 1400x1050 (SXGA+) native resolution and of similar characteristics/quality. Assuming both run at the same resolution, the difference may be attributed to different vendors, or one screen may be just defective/worn...

I've read on Thinkpads.com that some of the more recent laptops do not have LCDs as nice as the older models. Aspect ratio aside, do the new T's and W's have screens comparable to my T43? That machine has been awesome and I'm looking for an upgrade...but hoping the newer T60 I borrowed is not representative of those newer T's and W's.

Thanks!

There is no going back. The old A31p's cost upward of $2000. These lower tier T's cost around $800. The new high tier W can be expensive. But I don't think they will pay for the LCDs like they did ten years ago ever again. IPS panels are still being made, but for industrial use.
