T61P 14.1" 1400x150 max CPU

#1 Post by Springdale » Sun Mar 14, 2010 11:52 pm

I know this may be a question already answered in the Parts info : http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 68208.html

But I could of sworn the 8889-CTO T61p 14.1" non widerscreen featured pryn (T9xxx) core 2 duo cpus? Correct me if I'm wrong, thanks in advance :)

The fastest processor T61/p can have is Intel T9500 (2.6 GHz). However, you need to make sure your T61p is one of the later batch (it supposes to be T62/T62p, but Lenovo didn't use the label) which accepts Penryn processor. What is the FRU of the motherboard in your T61p?

no clue, but the build type is 8889 and the SN is L3A0122.

But the T61/p Non widescreen 14" never featured a intel processor higher than the T7xxx series?

They did. The supported higher cpus include T8100, T8300, T9300 and T9500.

Your T61p seems to be one of the later batch. So you should be able to install a penryn processor into it. Even if the motherboard does not fully support penryn processor, it will only give you a warning message complaining about digital thermal sensor during system startup, but not affect usage (anyone who has done this before may correct me if I am wrong).

Sorry to be the conveyor of bad tidings, but the ThinkPad T61p with type 8889 and the S/N you presented seems to be a model that doesn't support Penryn.

Wanted to confirm that the T6p1 featured a T9xxx series CPU with the standard 14.1" display? Why when I look at the parts it only lists up to a T7700? Thanks

I could be mistaken, but I believe the 8891 was the first model of the 14" 4:3 that fully supported the Penryn CPUs (see my sig).

If you look at the the T61 14.1" standard screen HMM (42x3545.pdf), you will see that the Penryn CPUs, up to T9500 are listed as options in 8889-Axx, 8900-ANx and a whole bunch of CTO configurations for model types 8889-8900, 8938 and 8939.

A am not familiar with these processors but am considering a T6x to replace my current T4x thinkpad (eventually).

How much difference is there between

a typical T60/61 and
a later model as discussed upgraded to a "Penryn"

Can any of those configs run a 64 bit OS?

Any Core 2 Duo CPU can run a 64bit. All T61s use Core 2 Duo. Among T60, the earlier ones used the 32bit Core Duo, and the later ones used Core 2 Duo (T5500/5600/T7200/7400/7600).

However, for a 64bit OS I would recommend a T61. T60 is chipset-limited to 3GB of RAM, which means that the machine cannot take advantage of what might be the #1 reason to go for a 64bit OS (addressing >4GB of memory).

T60s can only address approximately 3 Gb of memory because of some chipset limitation so there's no point in installing a 64 bit OS on them.

T61s are fully 64bit compatible. My T61 8889 runs 64 bit ubuntu linux and has 8 Gb of memory all of which can be seen.

T61 models use a processor called Merom. A notebook with a 2.6 GHz Penryn processor (T9500) performs between 3.0% and 8.2% better than a notebook with a 2.6 GHz Merom processor (T7800) under Vista 32, depending on benchmark, all other factors being equal.
