SOLD.... UJ-812 ultraslim (9.5mm) DVD-Multi Burner 4 sale
Just one thing that's a stickler...it isn't IBM OEM...it came out of a Japanese Toshiba Dynabook, so the faceplate/bezel is silver and not black...it will also need slight surgery to make it fit in the drive bay (this piece is slim and rectangular, but comes off easily for a bezel replacement if you have one, or you can spray the bezel black). Even so, if someone wants this drive, make me an offer. Still an excellent drive, and in immaculate condition. Only burned one disc with it before the laptop was dropped (on the opposite side of the DVD drive), shattered the screen and broke the side bezel and ultimately rendered the HDD inoperable too (the laptop was in the middle of some type of AV rendering when it was dropped on concrete). Toshiba warranty did not cover the damage. So, I have already parted out the CPU and a few other parts. Other parts could be parted out too, but there is no known Dynabook CX1 model here in the U.S. So....I'm not going to give the DVD burner a price here...just make me a resonable offer....will fit T40 series, or any other Thinkpads with UltrabaySlim.
This drive has the same specs as the OEM, IBM drive found here:

Working on getting a genuine Thinkpad faceplate. If this were to be put on the drive, then it would be much more appealing to everyone, I know. Anyway, will keep you updated on this. Will probably know about this sometime tomorrow.
By the way, will guarantee this drive to not be DOA. Check out my ratings on eBay ID is Badger40us I just want to offer it here before it goes to eBay.

Yeah, I understand. If you get a real IBM face plate on it I suspect you won't have any difficultly selling it.

SOLD it.
SOLD....actually I sent this out this morning. I had to come down on the price due to not being able to find the correct faceplate, but the buyer said he could modify it. The buyer is a member here, so if he wants, he can chime in after he gets it.
He got it...having trouble making it fit though...hope we can find a solution...if not, I've offered to take it back and pay for his shipping expenses too.

Actually, the guy I sold it to never could get the drive to "line up correctly" in his bay (this is strange because all drives are universal until you add the bezel/bracket, in my opinion) and so he sent it back...I refunded his money and shipping costs. So, it is back in my possession. I'll let it go for $105 plus shipping (It would be $100, but PayPal charges a fee).

phr, I just messaged Draco.....I'll let you know if he doesn't buy it. Sorry, I know of no other place it's being sold, except eBay where they are being sold as Thinkpad multi-burners and they are way over priced.

Hmm, any news? I'm actually now somewhat interested in your Ultrabay 2000 drive (see my post on other thread). I have an A20p (Ultrabay 2000) and an X40/X4 Ultrabase (Ultrabay Slim) and I'd sort of hoped to use the same drive in both, but by the time I get done buying bezel adapters and stuff it's not so attractive. Or I might just buy one of those UJ845's. I don't want to spend a lot on a drive unless it fits in the slim bay AND does +/-/R9.

I recommend the UJ-845 as price is nice and the slot drive is way cool!
I've been using the NEC ND-6500A in my T30 with very good results too. This is another option for you if you want a drive only for Ultrabay2000 (not Ultrabay Slim)....You can find it on www.newegg.com for $120. It is a 8X multiburner (+/- and dual layer!) and there is a good firmware upgrade on www.cdfreaks.com that I've been using that takes the speed limiter off, allows bitsetting burning (DVD-ROM) as well as making this drive Region-Free. I can direct you to the site for the correct download if you buy this drive. You would have to alter the faceplate on this drive too, but I've got an extra faceplate that I've alrady altered that I could send you for minimal $ that would just click into place...looks good too!
Good luck whatever you decide. With Ultrabay2000 there are some good choices out there. My suggestion is to do some research before buying. A good place is the Cdfreaks site I mentioned above...just go into the forums and do a search for the drives you are considering.

MIJ, Thanks for the info on the NEC drive! I ordered it from newegg for 116.99 and they have free shipping for the next few days!! It should get here next week and then I may take you up on that bezel offer but first I want to see whether I need that. I have the old dvd-rom drive that came with the a20p, that I might scrounge the bezel from. I just hope a comparable 9.5mm drive comes out soon.

Drive is now SOLD
Sent the drive off to its new owner this morning...I no longer have the UJ-812. Owner is on this forum so if he wants to comment once he gets the drive, he can....hope it all works out for him.

Price at newegg of the ND-6500 is now lowered to $110! I paid a couple bucks too much for mine
.
Here's a $20 usb2 external enclosure that should fit it. Maybe I'll put my nd-6500 in one of these if the a20p craps out. Heck, I'm tempted to buy another nd6500 just to have an external drive for my x40. Do you know if the uj822 is a +/-/R9 burner 9.5mm high? Does anyone sell them for less than $400? That's what I really want, of course.

No, the UJ-822 is +/-/RAM, and 9.5mm, but not DL...and no one sells them that I can find...they come as OEM in newest TP's as well as some Sony's and others.... Even if you could buy one for less that $400...why would you want to? I guess if you want it internally in your TP, you might but I would avoid it...wait (be patient)...something better is bound to come along. I do recommend you use the NEC in an external case. Sounds like the best idea so far!

So I installed that NEC drive in my A20p a week or so ago and tried writing some dvd's. The writes failed due to some type of scsi error. I'm running Red Hat 9 with a 2.4 series Linux kernel so I figured I'd get around to upgrading to 2.6 sometime and then see if that fixed the problem, and just not write dvd's til then. Meanwhile though, every so often I get these mysterious crashes with this stuff appearing in the system log:
Apr 21 11:27:16 localhost kernel: hdc: status error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Apr 21 11:27:16 localhost kernel: hdc: status error: error=0x04
Apr 21 11:27:16 localhost kernel: hdc: DMA disabled
Apr 21 11:27:16 localhost kernel: ide-scsi: Strange, packet command initiated yet DRQ isn't asserted
Apr 21 11:27:16 localhost kernel: hdc: ATAPI reset complete
[repeated occurrences of same error til machine crashes]
Any thoughts?
