T43 motherboard issue

#1 Post by MayorMcCheese » Thu Mar 18, 2010 1:52 pm

So, long story short, right now I own a T43 that makes a great doorstop. No power, no lights, no sounds, nothing. From reading this board I figure that my problem is that my motherboard is shot.

My question to you then, is where do I go from here? Should I get another T43 mobo off the market board/ebay, can I get an aftermarket mobo that would work, should I chalk it up as a loss and move on? I'm a novice when it comes to computer repair but I can read instructions.

Thanks for your input.

Welcome to the forum!

Sorry to hear about your T43.

Can you tell us a little more, like the machine's 7-character model number, located on the sticker on the bottom, should be something like 2668-46U or 1875-DLU...

Have you tried powering it on with a different battery or adapter?

When was the last time that the machine was actually running?

Good luck and let us know.

Sure, the model number is 1871-FU1.

I haven't tried another batter or adapter but both were working fine, when it last worked. I don't know anyone else with a Thinkpad.

The machine was last running a week ago. Put it in my backpack for a road trip, pulled it out on the trip, and nothing happened. I had just run a virus check a day or two before it died.

Let's try this old trick:

Remove the battery, hard and media drives. Unplug the adapter. Press the "power" button ten times in a row, holding it down for ten seconds each time, and thirty seconds the last time around.

Plug the adapter - but nothing else - back and try to power on.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Not even a small circled "z" light?

If that's the case, I'd be suspecting the adapter before anything else.

When I last used it, it was on a/c power and the battery was fully charged. When I tried to used it again, on the battery 24 hours later, it was dead.

I would think there would still be some power left in it and it would light up while not on a/c power.

The 16V 72W AC Adapters are dirt cheap everywhere.
It's a knock-off, but I trust this seller on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Power-Supply-Cord-f ... 0412777332
ca. $8.40 incl. shipping.
The original is not much more expensive at ca. $10.-

Alright, I'll pick one up in the next few days and give that a try.

Thanks for walking me through this.

Alright, got my new a/c adaptor and...still nothing. Although I did notice that when I plugged it in, there was some wiggle where you put the cord into the computer. Possibly a bad connection?

Thanks for the heads up on the ebay seller, good doing business with him.

Any thoughts on what to do next?
