Vertical lines when LCD moved - video

#1 Post by onehead » Fri Mar 19, 2010 9:08 pm

Hi,

I am desperately looking for a new flatmate. NOT in this post though...

There was a 15" SXGA+ T43 which worked excellently till some jerk dropped a 25kg wooden box on the top of the left corner of its LCD. The ThinkPad was open on a table and had a severe damage on the LCD and lid - also the HDD died from the 3 meters vertical and 1 meter horizontal drop. The LCD was smashed (and bent), the lid was broken and the left hand LCD support bracket was also bent. I have bought a Hitachi HDD (and get rid of the 2010 error) and also got the LCD on Tue.

I installed the screen just to figure out there is a green vertical line on the left hand side of the screen. LCD has been sent back, replacement arrived yesterday. Installed, no problem. Then when I moved the screen the lines were back.

I made a video to demonstrate this

So when you move the top lid a few coloured vertical lines come up. You can find positions or movements when the lines will go away - until you touch the lid and try to move. Cable at the back is securely connected and taped to LCD connector.

I am stuck and need your feedback – what should I check? The LCD is not an IBM one (no FRU) but the same model – and works OK despite the lines.

Please :)

Have you replaced the LCD cable along with the screen itself?

no, I haven't - but when I installed windows with a 14" temp replacement I did not have the problem (well, to be honest, I did not touch the lid as I was just happy enough to have a smaller screen fitted and working during the install)

Replacing the cable (an inexpensive experiment nowadays) would be my next step to eliminate the possibility of a damaged cable being the culprit.

the only problem with that I'll go away for three wks on Tue and no way I can source the cable by then

can we say that it's _definetely_not_ the LCD's fault?
As I can live with it for three weeks and then replace the cable or whatever but if there is any chance to have a problem with the screen then I have to send it back now to get a refund (however I think it's not the LCD, but I'm not sure)

My vote would be that it most likely is a fault in the LCD panel. If the defect is limited in scope to only a few columns, my suspicion is that there is a loose connection in the column drivers along the edge of the LCD.

I have tried to play along but all odds against me :x
the machine in question is a 2668-CTO (Z4J), so instead of just looking for a "T43 15" SXGA+ sreen cable" on ebay I went for Lenovo's site to have the correct FRU

There's no Z4x model nowhere near:

so probably the safest bet to have the LCD sent back once more but that leaves me without my TP for three weeks - unless there is somebody in London who happens to have a 15" SXGA+ cable laying around in the loft :(

The FRU# is 91P6857 for a 15" T43 SXGA+ LCD Cable

those only can be found in the US [eBay] so out of question - I'll check the FRU on the cable later today and we'll see

That is not correct. IBM UK Sells it.

obviously :)
but it won't be here by Tuesday
I just ripped it off again and found out that the correct number is 91P6892 [SXGA+ IPS is also written on it]

I have loads of different cables like T42 SXGA+ or T43 XGA
can I use one of them for test the LCD? I do not want to kill neither the LCD nor the MB.

I have the same issue with a 14' T42. It has one line on the left and is red then sometimes green if I tilt the screen but I can make it go away. It's done it since i bought it but i would like to fix it. Let me know if the cable is the culprit :).

I have one as well, with a black line on the left side of the screen. I had previously had the machine "reballed" by Superior and when this problem appeared after a few months just assumed that one of the pins had gotten loose. I'll have to give it a try with a different cable.

I've ordered the cable - probably it's arrived as well - but I can only test it when I'm back

SOLVED: Vertical lines when LCD moved - video

OK just to confirm for searchers on this topic - it was the LCD which caused the issue not the cable.

The first two came from the same seller from ebay (both used) and the 3rd came from a different guy (new one and cheaper by a fiver) - it's glossy but works just fine.
