Restoring a T23

#1 Post by aquasonic » Sun Mar 21, 2010 8:03 pm

Hello to all! Yesterday i bought 3 IBMs for 30 Euros! Not a bad deal! A 600, a 600x and a T23 (though the seller was selling 3 600... Better for me!)

The lapty arrived without psu, battery, lan&modem cards, hdd caddy & cover and the dvd. i booted it with a psu from a 600E i have (Finaly i have them all! -i mean the 600!) and i all i got was a fizzy sound coming from the LCD assembly and the ibm logo for 4 seconds before getting into dark. It appeard that by just unscrewing the inverter assembly all problems gone.

Second part : I cannot afford buying the lan & modem cards. After browsing around my inventory i found my 2 dead hp omnibooks, from which i took the combo lan&modem card. Lucky for me the connectors fit perfectly! I only hope it will work, but i'll find that only after i install something in it.

Sadly, i found out that the ultra bay adapter from the 600 doesn't fit into the T23 properly so i will have to wait till my drive arrives (bought it 10mins ago from ebay.) plus, i don't have a hdd caddy and i am afraid that i might brake the ide connector without it.

the inductors seem to be ok, the fan is spinning happily and this lapty hasn't work a lot in it's life. it doesn't show any signs of usage, except a missing alt key. the only thing that i am curious is how much time it can hold on battery. It is pretty slick and light so it can easily replace my 9" netbook.

so, 10euro for the laptop, 0 for ram (from my vault ) + 5 for hdd caddy & cover + 14 for the dvddrive = 29 euros. With a new battery (60euros in Greece) the price tag is getting high. The only way is to get a used one and change the cells or one from ebay (~27 euros)... Any suggestions?

The Dvd drive arrived, win2k installed everything is okay except one thing.

As i mentioned before i will be using a combo lan/modem card from an omnibook xe3. it is an accron mini pci, and it has exactly the same connectors with the ibm for Lan and Telephone. However when i connect it, the sound card dissapears. I am thinking of an irq conflict, but still... i should get a warning from windows.

Also i am getting an unknown pci device in windows. Currently i don't have a mini pci onboard so i guess i can rule out the modem, and i have install the acpi driver. So what is it?

edit : I just found out that it's an irq conflict, but windows won't let me change it. Suggestions?

That card will not work.
You need a separate LAN card as shown here: http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-THINKPAD-T23-LA ... 0540139722
In the other (large) slot you can fit either a modem card, a wifi card (if you have built-in antennae), or a modem/wifi combo card.
Nothing else will fit.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
