X60 hot watching videos full screen

#1 Post by billchouca » Thu Mar 25, 2010 7:12 pm

I "upgraded" to my wife's old X60 and I've been very impressed with the laptop. The build quality is really awesome, much better than the X301 that I was using before. Now I'm really curious about the older laptops like X32 that others allude to, saying that those things are like tanks...

Anyways, I hook my laptop up to an external 22" LCD at 1680x1050 via VGA out (if I use DVI using the IOGear device I mention in another thread, the full-screen video is choppy). I notice that when I watch videos on Hulu (say Simpsons) and blow it up to full-screen, the laptop gets very hot. TPFanControl clocks 80 F on the CPU. Normal operating temperature is about 50 F. The laptop is on a metallic Antec cooling pad at all times.

Do others notice the same thing? Anything you can do to make it not burn up as much? Is it just the GMA 945 not being powerful enough to handle full-screen video?

My X60 is a T2300 with 3 GB of RAM, GMA 945, plugged into a Lenovo slim 90W adapter. I grabbed the latest drivers from Lenovo and everything seems to be up to date. I'm runnings Windows XP SP3. I've got a Western Digital 5400 rpm 320GB HDD.
