windows 7 on W500 -experiencing huge spee change over Vista

#1 Post by jwid » Sat Mar 27, 2010 3:10 am

I've just moved on to win7 pro 64 after a mate convinced me to do so, and for one i never regret doing so.
It's running faster in terms of boot and shut down time, and now i'm free from those slow-down problems that i failed to solve when my thinkpad running on Vista.
Not that i hate vista, in fact, computing was much more fun than when i was still running XP, only that win7 is giving more.

When i used Vista business, i had my power manager to automatically power off the optical drive. Then i clean installed the system with win7 Pro, installed power manager, etc etc.
Now i notice that i can't find the option to power off the optical drive in TV power manager, nor the OS/PM automatically power it off. i have to manually safely-eject the dvd drive to have it powered off.

Can anyone tell me why such good feature is missing(edited) on win7 PM?

cheers

it's been posted for a while and no one answering i thought it was only me having the problem, moreover googling it turns in no result either,
well, my bad, i'll just post the solution and hopefully it'd be useful for anyone having the problem in the future.

solution:
after installing PM v3.12, there is no automatic optical drive setting in PM,
download and install Power Management Driver v1.6(latest as of today). problem solved for me running win7 x64. PM now shows that particular setting.

Happy Easter to those who celebrates!

Why shut down and reboot? Is sleep/standby mode not working?

I,'m sorry i don't understand what you are saying. If you asked whether or not pressing fn+f3 will put the laptop to sleep, answer is yes.

I'm asking, "Why shut down and reboot? Is sleep/standby mode not working?" I really don't know how to make those words clearer. They're stripped down about as far as possible and pretty clear in my book. I'm asking why you shut down and reboot, when using sleep/standby mode is much faster and there's usually no need to reboot.

You wrote, "It's running faster in terms of boot and shut down time", which seems like a pretty worthless improvement. I'm not trying to be abrasive here, just trying to understand and help, by suggesting that you don't need to reboot and shut down so much.

there, you made it clearer by quoting which part that i said which you want to refer to. Since the boot and shut down process was not a problem at all that was not the reason i posted in the first place. As you can go straight away to the point where i wondered why power manager in my thinkpad had lost the function to automatically turn off the optical drive, that has been solved.
well anyway... i rarely put the laptop to sleep anymore eversince i have win7 installed, because now booting up and shut down time is very short i found it really convenient to just shut it down rather than putting it to sleep. i get the benefit of fresh start everytime dont you think? besides, i don't feel comfortable carrying around the laptop in a bag in sleep state. When i was running vista, shut down time took about 2 mins, and sleep took about 1 min 45 secs...there was no difference at all. Now i don't bother to spend any time deciding whether to go shut down or sleep, i just shut it down everytime (it takes merely a couple of seconds). what do you think?
