Use of a Sata Drive via Ultrabay for a X41 Tablet

#1 Post by crm » Tue Mar 30, 2010 5:44 am

Hi all,

First post here so go easy please!

I have bought a Thinkpad X41 Tablet from Ebay and now have discovered the issue regarding the hard drive! As my machine came without a hard drive from the seller I need to source one but I am shocked at the price compared to what you are actually buying,

HOWEVER, I have seen an Ultrabay Slim Adaptor on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ultrabay-Slim-SAT ... 518eda10e5

and it says its compatible with the X41 Tablet would this not be a lot easier to use this? Am I right in thinking that this would be just a straight swapout for the CDROM drive meaning I could use this as the Primary HDD rather than hunting for a 1.8" Drive? Will it be slower ?

Any help appreciated,

Thanks

To use that device you would need the dock that goes along with the X41T.

Trust me, I own the dock and the X41T.

Since the X41T by itself does not have an ultrabay slot you cannot run a SATA drive inside the machine, it must be used in the dock.

As far as speed is concerned it will be faster than the stock 4200RPM drive most X41T's have, however it might be tad slower than running it inside a machine that natively supports SATA hard disks due to running it through the dock.

Your best bet I think would be to pick up a 60GB SSD drive for the machine and move on.

If you mean "good ol'" HDDs you can find a list here

For SSDs, I think the Kingspec models are the cheapest ones...
