Info for the people "behind the sceenes"

#1 Post by jwege » Tue Mar 30, 2010 1:12 pm

Hi,

do not know where to post, so, maybe here it is fine.

I wanted to share an experience I had and that took quite some time for me to find out, but I am sure this will maybe also occur to other users:

1.) Symptoms:
My Notebook (in this case it was an Acer, but I am quite sure the same can happen to allmost every PC) shut down occationally. In many cases even with incorrect termination of Windows, i.e. when accessing an external USB harddrive or making a bigger copy of files via network to a NAS.

After switching on again, sometimes the Windows message oif an improper shutdown appeared, sometimes not.

Sometimes it would boot just correctly, sometimes it would start the boot process but the hold in the middle of the process with a blinking cursor on the upper left corner.

In the first times, I thought it was Windows update (which I had disabled). Later, I thought that I had a bad Update form Windows and it was simply a crash of the system.

Only after a while, when the outage occurred directly whe I worked on the machine, I discovered that, if I instantly switched the machine on again, it would shut down with no message in the middle of the boot process.

But if I would wait some minutes (first, I thought I need to remove the battery to make it forget anything, but it was simple the time, read on to see why ...), it would start normal, all would work and the machine would run normal. Only after a period of time, it would break down again.

Finally, I thougth that it is quite warm where the processor sits ...

2.) Solution:
After openning the notebook, I discovered that the Fan, the air-flow area and the rest of the cooling device simply was full of dust (I had refurbishments in the house been done and therefor much mor dust that normally) and micro-fabrics.

After cleaning the PC with vacuum cleaner and a small brush at those areas, it works quite with no error since weeks now.

Maybe this is a hint you technical guys in the background would consider if a similar question from a user will be posted.

Regards

i have found myself in similar situations..

once i rule out the complex solutions, the one remaining is to just clean the dust out..! :)

Whenever I get a new (used) laptop that is the first thing I do. Blow out the vents, repaste the CPU.

Then I go for the complex issues.
New:
Thinkpad T430s 8GB DDR3, 1600x900, 128GB + 250GB SSD's, etc.
Old:
E6520, Precision M4400, D630, Latitude E6520
ThinkPad Tablet 16GB 1838-22U
IBM Thinkpad X61T, T61, T43, X41T, T60, T41P, T42, T410, X301
