t42 few questions.

#1 Post by samba » Thu Jun 10, 2004 12:46 pm

I received my T42 2379DXU . I also ordered extra 512MB and port replicator.
1) T42 is thicker than I expected. Is it 1.2 inch all across ? How about T41 ? Is it 1 inch all across?
2) Extra memory was not put in. I had to do it my self.
3) I see the windows key missing on keyboard. I had a dell inspiron 8000 before. It has the windows key on it. Is there a key on thinkpad equivalent to it? I use to start windows explorer (windows key + E).
4) I also don't see any keyboard/mouse connector. Do I have to use a USB mouse?

Thanks

1. The smaller form factor T41 is not 1 inch all across. It progressively gets thicker as well but it is thinner than a 15" T42.

2. ? Not too hard to install it.

3. They don't come with a windows key but there is key remapping software available for download through the support website that lets you remap a key you don't use for your windows key.

4. Yes, you have to use a USB mouse/keyboard.

Ctrl-Esc is the Windows keyboard shortcut for the start menu.

Go to the site below and you can download software from IBM to specify a windows key

Opps. I didn't read the question thoroughly enough.

To make a custom keyboard shortcut to Windows Explorer without software:
1. In the start menu, right-click Windows Explorer and select Properties.
2. On the Shortcut tab, single-click in the Shortcut Key, press the keyboard shortcut you want to use (I use Ctrl + ~), and press the Apply button.
3. Try your new keyboard shortcut.

4) You can also use bluetooth, if you have that :)

Yep T41 gets thicker too.. I was a bit dissapointed by that too - because in al specs I had seen, it had said 1" - only after purchase, I discover that the real figures are found in tabook.pdf - not that it would have influenced my purchas I think - but I would have liked to known...

I'd rather a laptop that's 1.2" across, than 1" at the beginning and 1.4" at the back.

I find the slight increase in thickness gives the keyboard an excellent working slope. Much nicer than the "old" flat keyboards of earlier T series.

You can use the above process to make a customized keyboard shortcut for any application (if that is what you were referring to) :)

you know, I was being sarcastic... I misread your post and thought you were making the shortcut within IE, not Windows... I don't use IE, I use Firefox for a browser (it's great!), but now that I understand your post,... I never knew that before... that kind of shortcut is exactly something I've been looking for!!!

Thanks!
