question about Replacement parts (PLEASE READ IF U GOT FVU)

#1 Post by jhonyl » Sun Feb 27, 2005 9:51 pm

Hi,

1. Can someone with a T42 please post the list of all (and I mean all) the
parts that comprise his laptop? There is a link that maybe does that
listing
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... sLookup.vm

I don't have TP yet, so I haven't got a serial number so I can't use that link myself.

I am especially interested in models like the 2378-FVU, that has a 14.1'' SXGA+ screen and good graphics card

2. I was reading through the group, and I have got the impression
that I can order any part number that I want from IBM.

Can I really do so? Are all the part numbers available for sale?

Can I get say all the parts that make the T42 2378-FVU, and make myself
a Thinkpad assembly Kit, from which potentially I could build that thinkpad? Will IBM agree to sell me all these parts?

I have seen a page at IBM.com where I could add a part number to
a shopping list with prices for all the parts. I tried to figure out how
much the "CASE" of the laptop cost, and I have got to 390$, but I am not sure since I don't have an exact part numbers list, and I just went through the schematics and added what I thought would make one "CASE". BTW some of the parts on the schematics were "incorrect or not available", so I kind of mixed elements from different models I am afraid.

Thanks for the help.

i'm certainly you can buy most if not all parts that make up the FVU. Will you have the tools to assemble, would it be cheaper, will the finished assemble half as good as the one from ibm, etc?

That's another question that i don't want to answer.

Yes, you can, for about three times the cost of purchasing a completed laptop from IBM.

You can build a car out of all the parts, and spend many times the price of the same car also. This is just not a cost-effective solution.

Uhhhhh.... nobody said yes you realisitically can! Have you checked any prices on the IBM parts site? The 14'1" SXGA+ display (part no. 11P8346) alone is $1475! That's just for the LCD, not the display enclosure. A 2GHz CPU for the T42 series is $1579 JUST for the processor, not the motherboard!

Download the HMM for the model you're interested in and look up the individual parts numbers.

Please update your profile to show your location.

JHEM, Thanks for the HMM comment, however it overlaps the knowledge that I have already seen at IBM website. To be specific, the data there is organized by [part number ; matching models list]. Some actual part has several variations for each models. Some models don't appear in any of the part variation, hence I don't know which part is right for them. If someone really have the notebook and has a list of parts he/she could copy and paste that would give me the parts list that I look for. i.e. [ model ; actual parts list]

JHEM and others: I just want to know the part list (for a specific model). I understand that you don't think it is reallistic, you think it would be more expensive this way, you think that I shouldn't do that... I have noticed that opinion, and I thank you. You may be right, but I still am curious for the part list.

Thanks.

PS.
1. You can get the samsung LCD for $400 not from IBM
2. You can get 1.7Ghz Banias for around 250$ also not from IBM

Sure, you can get the LCD for $400, but it is a refurbished one, not a new one. It is an LCD that got returned with a "unknown" defect, got tossed into a pile, got tested, and somebody declared it "good". I almost guarantee you that a $400 Samsung LCD panel ordered off the web somewhere has some sort of issue/problem/defect. Just FYI.
If you use parts like this, you would be building yourself a used Thinkpad.
Rediculous, IMHO.
If you want to do this, just buy a used Thinkpad or a refurb that carries some warranty. Or...go to pawnshops, etc and buy working or non-working Thinkpads, and then restore them with new parts.

Likely you have been reading threads or forums referring to "whitebox" or other such notebooks. Thinkpads just aren't available that way, built from new individual parts, for less money than new.

Even if you save money on the CPU, memory, hard drive, CD-ROM, using a new LCD panel will negate every dime you saved and a lot more.

Why can't one person mail the part list :( :....(

Take a look at model number LTN141P4 price

online LCD store

Look at their terms and condition page 1 year warranty for LCD :P
