Moving HD from TP600 to TP600x

#1 Post by Olde Man » Fri Apr 02, 2010 3:51 pm

I have a 40 gig HD (OS Win98SE) in a 600 that I want to move to a 600x. I have been advised that moving the OS directly will not work.

I assume I will have to delete the current OS and re-install it. That correct?

Can I expect a problem with such things as Quicken etc.?

There are some differences between 600 and 600X hardware that will require different drivers. But, W98 is fairly forgiving when going from one machine to another. Much more so than XP.

I say, give it a try. Just swap the HDD and see what happens. It will probably work just fine. Windows should contain most, if not all, the 600X drivers. But, it will take a few minutes, and a few re-boots before everything get set-up.

You shouldn't have any trouble with software that is already installed.

Everything worked as you described...except for one glitch.

The display is at double size and thus very ragged.

The system says: IBM TP 1024x768 LCD Panel on STD PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)

However, the think is stuck on 640x480 apparently and I can't get the 'slide' to move.

Any suggestions? I have tried to re-do the drivers with no luck. It keeps coming back to the STD PCI etc.

Download this graphics driver. When you install this driver, it will un-pack it's contents to the "Drivers" folder on your hard drive. It does not actually install the dirver. I don't remember for sure, but I don't think the driver package includes an install or setup scipt. So you will need to go to device manager and choose to update the standard graphics adapter with the one you downloaded. Install from "specific location", or "have disk", or something like that is what you will choose. Sorry about being so vague, but I don't have Windows on the 600X I'm using right now or I could be more specific.

Well, your good advice worked well on the 600x. Screen now looks OK.

However, on the 600 another story. After considerable juking around, found that the 600 does not seem to recognize its monitor. No IBM TP 1024x768 LCD to be seen anywhere. The only IBM to be seen on the hardware list is IBM PC which does not work. Tried some generic ones but they refused the adapter.

I have installed the 'updates' whatever they are.

I will keep pecking away, but if you have an idea.....

Well, the peck worked right after I posted. I got it stabilized so I can read it.

Thanks for your help. Keep your feet dry, and get plenty of sleep. You are useful around here.

The Olde Man.
