So who went out and got the iPad ??
Up here in Canada they don't come out for another few weeks. But still the city here it's the talk of all the young people and university students. They cant wait to get one.
For me i just don't see what the big deal is about it.Shure it's nice and would be fun to have. But for $500.00 for just the 16gb iPad,that would be a nice used Thinkpad.
I am going to keep an eye on the price of them and see if prices drop.

The iPad sounds too restrictive for my needs. No USB, no flash, no multitasking.
$500 will get you a nice used X60 tablet that isn't restrictive, has better performance and will run normal applications as well.

I also know this is a Thinkpad forum.I have been here for many years....But the fact is many Thinkpad owners here also have MacBook's.So it's a fair question to see if anyone got or is getting a iPad.

Re: So who went out and got the iPad ??
We met up with a friend at a cafe last night, and he brought along his recently purchased iPad. I have to admit it's hard not getting impressed by this shiny, slim little thing when you see the picture that turns when it's flipped over for you to see, the excellent quality screen with the touch/drag/drop functions, the number of applications made to work with it, and the list goes on.
The first drawback, in my eyes, is that you have to send it somewhere to have the battery changed. And the mentioned storage capacity limits the possibility to store almost anything locally. Our friend didn't know what you could actually connect to it, but a big proprietary port led me to suspect there might be a port replicator for it.
So after digesting the first impressions for a while, I start to see it's maybe more shine than "go". What can you actually do with this uhm.. computer, beyond the various multimedia things? How much will you be using it when the first sensation is gone? If I go anywhere, would I leave my IdeaPad netbook, a fully capable computer, behind in favor of the iPad? And if you really fancy the touchscreen and it's functionality, how far does a ThinkPad tablet, or any other tablet, bring me? I don't know enough about them to say for sure. But if I ever find my self in the market for something like this, I will probably make sure I end up buying something that stays usable, and not just turns out annoying from the lack of capability to do anything beyond the multimedia part.

without looking at the specs in detail it just looks like a bigger iPhone..
much ado about nothing..
the "young people" are easily convinced to buy "pig in a poke"..
especially to have memory so limited in this day when massive amounts of memory are so cheap..
could it be that Apple is becoming a marketing company more than a technology company..
market something that is limited and then release the "upgrade" in 6 or 12 months..?!
OR, perhaps, steve jobs has learned from gilette.. give the razor away and sell overpriced blades..
the battery issue is just one more reason to await something better from either lenovo or h/p or, <urp> dell..
based on what i see in my iPhone or the MacBook Pro i have sitting gathering dust, doing anything more than just watching mindless pretty pictures will be difficult..
apple products, while pretty, are not flexible..
when IMSAI and others made S-100 buss personal computers the S-100 buss structure became the "standard"..
please recall that when IBM made the PC architecture "open" the PC became the "standard" when thousands of small business people made add-on's for the PC..
apple seems intent on guarding their "not-so-little" proprietary world with "whiz-BANG!" eye candy with limited flexability..
again, it seems that they want their customers locked into their download store..
i may be old fashioned but i prefer not to have batters worries when reading a book or reception difficulties when using a cellphone..
(my old motorola razr works so much better in fringe areas than my iPhone)

Whilist I am not a fan of Apple's products - I think that this will / has sold well.
I think people only bought it becuase it has an Apple logo on it and it is now the "must-have accessory".
Just my opinion.

Re: So who went out and got the iPad ??
The conclusion after looking at it even more, is that my imaginary iPad would probably have ended up in the pile of "interesting" gadgets, gathering dust. On the other hand, I must admit I would fancy an iPhone. But that's just because the phone, besides being pretty, has some basic flexibility like the ability to make ordinary phone calls and send/receive texts. (Or at least I hope it can do that..BillMorrow wrote:without looking at the specs in detail it just looks like a bigger iPhone..

Re: So who went out and got the iPad ??
I personaly don't understand what do people see in the iPad - it has got nothing more than tablets have... .
Personaly, I won't buy it - I bought a Dell Axim X5 palmtop instead.
I never liked Apple products - and the iPad has all that I dislike in modern Apple products. For starters - the price of the unit. Now, in the USA the entry version costs 500$. But those guys in the Polish division of Apple want to sell it for about 750$ (I hope that this price is with the value added tax) - I coul buy two x61 tablets in near mint condition for that. Another thing is the way Apple treats it's customers - in my mind if I purchase a computer I want to install any app on it. But Apple knows better (and sells apps through their store - making money as they have a monopoly for apps). Also speaking in terms of software - Apple only has made their SDK available for Mac (another great way of squeezing money from the developers) - some ports exist on Windows, but they're pretty much useless. Another thing that bothers me is the way that Apple treats developers that want to publish their apps on the AppStore - they can ban an app for next to everything without giving details. And lastly, I just hate the fact that Apple wants to have monopoly on hardware also by not making users to service some parts - take the info about the iPad - it has a built-in battery and if it dies you have to pay 100$ + shipping for a new unit, but they will take your old one. Now one would say 'So what ?' but in my opinion it's a scam - you overpay about 50$ for the battery, and your old unit, after refitting it with a new battery will be sold as a refurbished unit - also you have to wait a couple of days for a new unit, instead of just taking the old one and put a new one (be reasonable - if a battery dies in a remote no-one would change the whole thing). Also the iPad doesn't have a built-in memory slot or add-on slots such as PCMCIA.
So, I'll just stick with the PocketPC platform instead - of course a palmtop has a 3,5" screen, but it also features I need (plus it fits in a pocket - beat that, Apple
).

Another reason why not to get one - appartently it has Wireless Internet problems now, ie - users have little, or no Wi-Fi connectivety.

Re: So who went out and got the iPad ??
Apple have changed some paradigms over the last few years, although in some cases they were late comers... it was, for example, the Koreans who really innovated with MP3 players, only to be usurped by Apple's better marketing and, to be honest, their ability to bring some order to a chaotic market, albeit through a totalitarian obsession with conformity.
I won't be buying an iPad. Too many negatives (fixed battery, no expansion) and as I suppose should be obvious I prefer the IBM/Lenovo approach to (for want of a better description) industrial design.
I did, however, receive a shiny new SIM free HTC Legend today and so far am loving it. Complements my X200s perfectly (given me internet and email where I couldn't or wouldn't want to take my ThinkPad), extremely intuitive to use and as customisable and configurable as the iPhone isn't, and of course I'm not tied into a rip off iPhone contract. Plus it's as stylishly designed and well made as any product produced by Apple...

So... 300,000 brainwashed idiots and counting. Nice.
Re: So who went out and got the iPad ??
300,000 in a population of about 360 million is an interesting statistic. Around 0.8% if my maths are correct. How convincing is that? I wonder what first day target was?
Maybe not bad revenue for first day of sale. Although, compared to R&D, manufacturing, marketing, sales, and distibution costs it doesn't seem sufficient. Maybe they are already looking at version 2 ... which might contain USB and a battery that can be replaced?
My response contains so many questions, probably because I can't see the value of ownership.

Even if I had money to burn - which I don't - iPad would never make it into my shopping cart.
I have no use for it. Period.
Neither do thousands of people who had to "have it first"...not IMHO anyway. But it's their money to spend.

Re: So who went out and got the iPad ??
I have an Ipod Touch.
Would I like an iPad?
Yes.
For e-book reading.
Will I buy one?
No.
When it has the features I want then maybe I will.
I want an SD slot and a camera.
Since my Touch is jailbroken I would give any iPad that I *might* own about 5 minutes before it is no longer tied to Apple's Itunes Store. Or their DRM.
I personally HATE flash so not having it is a product bonus, at least for me.

I personally HATE flash so not having it is a product bonus, at least for me.

Can't believe I have to defend myself over this crap... "device melts away" but a little farther down she mentions the finger prints problem or no keyboard problem... Are you kidding me...?

Backlit screens aren't good for reading. Don't take it from me; Ipad not as easy on the eyes as the Kindle.Temetka wrote:Would I like an iPad?
Yes.
For e-book reading.
