R60 & dead batteries

#1 Post by cnc_couple » Mon Apr 05, 2010 1:08 am

Has anyone elts had a problem with their r60 freezing because of a bad battery?
Does anyone know why this happens?

My R60 works with my r61 battery, it works without the battery when running on the ac adapter but when I use its battery (that wont hold a charge) it freezes after I log onto windows

Welcome to the Forum.
Counter-question: why would anyone keep a bad/dead battery inside the laptop?
Windows is trying to display the 'time left' or 'charging percentage', but the bad battery prevents Windows from reading its status.
Replace it with a working one, problem sorted.

Actually it reads charging but the percentage stays at 0% and as far as keeping a dead battery in my laptop- It keeps the terminals from getting damaged as well as preventing build up- Further more it helps keep the structural integrity of the laptop when moving it arround.

Thanks for welcoming me to the forum as well as your opinion of what is going on, I think there might be more to it, so if anyone has an idea then please post thanks again

Take the HD out, then try to boot from a Life Linux CD (Knoppix/Ubuntu/Mint etc.).
Try with both bad battery in and out.
What are the symptoms now?

I've had T60, R60E and X60s all exibit this type of behaviour due to a defective battery.

If you keep the machine running with that battery installed you will end up damaging the charging circuit on the motherboard.

Just throw it out and get a replacement battery. It's really that simple.

Thank you for all the input everyone- I have actually ordered a new battery already and it should be arriving within a few days. I was just currious why the IBM's act like they do with a junk battery, from what you all have told me I am left to assume that it is some sort of fail safe primative operation for self preservation.

I've had Dell laptops and HP laptops with dead batteries that worked properly, the only laptop to ever give me grief is the lenovo, guess curiosity killed the cat with this one is all lol, again thank you all for your input it is most enlightening!
