T2060 CPU in T60/R60 Machines

#1 Post by virge » Tue Apr 06, 2010 10:59 am

This is more of an FYI than a question. I did a search of the forum and there didn't seem to be any definite answer as whether this CPU would work. I've tried two T2060 CPUs in several T60 and R60 motherboards. Doesn't boot! Maybe this will save someone else from going through the expense of trial and error.

Did you upgrade to the latest BIOS before you put in the CPU ?

According to wiki the T2060 is really a dual-core Pentium M (Socket 479). Physically it'll fit, but is 'electrically incompatible'. T60's use Socket M, in which one pin is different from the older versions Socket 479. Looks like there's also a new spec 479 (or maybe the new 479 = Socket M?) socket which the Core Duo's, etc use. Pretty interesting how many variations there are of all this..

@frankiepankie: I just ran the BIOS update. Swapped the CPU and still no go.

@vinuneuro: Thanks for the technical explanation! I used to know the different Sockets, but it seems like in the last few years they've gotten more confusing.

vinuneuro,

How did you come to the conclusion that the T2060 is Socket 479? The first link on your list shows it as Socket M.

I have no idea. I thought at the time there was some source refuted that. :) Sorry for the misinformation. We're back to wondering why these processors won't work then.

My guess, which is purely a guess, is that the BIOS doesn't recognize the CPU, and attempts to run it at 667MHz bus speed (which is equivalent to a 25% overclock), and the CPU can't handle it.

Might just be showing my ignorance :) but would putting in slower memory solve, if above quote is the cause? I don't know if there's different internal/external bus speeds or something though.
Moved to Chrome OS, so... SK-8855 USB Keyboard

FSB and RAM speeds are different things, so I don't think that slower memory will have an effect...
