Sales Rep Saying that X201S is Being Discontinued?

#1 Post by alpuzz » Wed Apr 07, 2010 12:49 pm

My Lenovo rep is telling me that the X201S is being discontinued. He said that Lenovo can no longer get the LCD panels they were using for that model, and that they are therefore discontinuing the model altogether? Can anyone shed some light on this As it doesn't seem sensible that Lenovo would release a new model and then discontinue it just a few months later.
Thanks,

Interesting. x201s is not available anywhere and Lenovo's web site is not publishing the x201s for sale either.

I have been trying to find one but was given an eta of mid May.

When I ordered my x201s a few days ago, the wait time on the 2.0ghz processor was 5 weeks; the wait time on the 2.13ghz was 10 weeks. The x201s is only configurable with an i7 chip; I believe the x201 is configurable with a i5 or i7 -- and currently you cannot configure it with an i7.

I just called the epp line and was also told that the X201s has been removed and that they couldn't even place an order for me even if I was willing to wait.

It's really too bad, as I'd much rather have the X201s over the X201. Hopefully this is just a temporary thing...

I'm going to cancel my x201s order (ships 6/14/2010) and order the topseller instead from a third party. Even without family+friends discount, it's far cheaper due to no sales tax.

The only thing that bugs me is the topseller has a touchpad. I hope a disabled touchpad is no worse than no touchpad at all.

Oddly, the x201 seems all-around inferior to the x201s (screen, [processor], *and* size). Usually it's a tradeoff...

edit: whoops, x201's 540M is faster than x201s' 640LM.

Unless you'd prefer a *faster* processor over a less power-hungry one.

Many of the recent updates to Thinkpad lines has been quite messy.

Not too surprised if X201 becomes discontinued...

Better grab whatever remaining stocks of X201 from tp dealers before their stocks of remaining X201s disappear for good

There is one last piece available here in Taiwan at one of the retail shops. I was thinking of getting it but it comes out to around $1850 USD.

The X201s has now disappeared from the UK website.

You think he was just trying to get a near-term sale out of you? I mean Lenovo just launched the "s", so why would they abandon ship basically after launch? You mean to tell me Lenovo has no leverage over panel suppliers? I'm interested in the "s" too and trying to understand the sudden change.

Seems like they have a shortage of 640LM/620LM chips...

This also affects the shipment of the x201 tablet.

What I don't understand is that my guy made it sound like the X200S is permanantly gone. It didn't seem like it was temporarily unavailable due to a shortage. For whatever reason, it doesn't seem like any of the T410S or X201 machines currrently available can be shipped with any type of I7 processor, which is really a bummer.

A bit odd to be out of these processors now that I know that Apple didn't order any :?

On Lenovo Japan website, x201s is offered with wxga+ LED LCD and choice of i7-620LM or i7-640LM processors. x201t tablet is also offered as well.

Absence of x201s or x201t in USA seems to be a supply/demand issue.

Because he works on commission and is trying to get the sale NOW out of you. If you didnt order NOW, you might order from another rep later or not order a TP at all. Regardless, he needs you to order now and quite likley lied to get the same out of you NOW.

My x201s arrived (the bestseller) -- I didn't expect it would be so much wider than my x40. The ~1 inch border around the screen on all sides gives it a retro, 1980s-laptop look; seems unnecessarily wide. But it's .5lbs lighter than my x40, and the screen contains 33% more pixels.

I'm going to have to replace the noisy (e.g., not silent) 7200rpm drive with an x-25m.

Any ideas on how long the X201S or tablet will not be available?

Did you get the 500GB HDD or the 320GB HDD? I saw one with the 320 one and thought it was pretty quiet. I do plan on getting a SSD in mine once I get mine.

320gb. There's only one bestseller x201s, so anyone who advertises an x201s with 500gb is either incorrect or selling a customized unit. The 320gb is by no means loud. But it's (naturally) louder than my x40's 5400rpm drive, and it's noticeable.

I was told by Lenovo here in Hong-Kong today that they expect shipments of the X201s models in the middle of May towards the end of May. They said I could not receive the one I had ordered because of shortage of CPU's but another customer had ordered an identical one to mine which he did not want now so they are supposed to deliver it to my hotel in the morning tomorrow
