T61 with Win 7 sound and video problem - strange breaks

#1 Post by JAJO » Fri Apr 09, 2010 7:09 am

Hello.

In the begining I'm sorry for my english because it is poor but I'll do my best to explain everything.

I have Thinkpad T61 7664-1KU (C2D T7500, 4GB DDR2 Kingston HyperX, 160 GB HDD Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00) and with Win 7 Pro x64 installed and all up-to-data drivers.

When I'm listening to music from time to time there are some '1 ms' breaks, something like other program/application interrupt audio playing.
When I'm watching video (K-Lite Mega Codec Pack with MPC Home Cinema - newest) sometimes after 20 or 30 min. watching or even more the video freez. I have to stop playing video, close the MPC and start the video again and forward to time when it has freezed.

On Win XP Pro x86 everything was fine and I don't want downgrade to this system even though XP is very good system and I was really glad of using it but Win 7 is really good to me to exept those issue above.

Is there any help for me or is there anyone who had the same problems as me and resolved them?

THX anyway.

Not sure about audio as I don't remember anyone claiming this issue... I don't have such problems with same Win7 x64. maybe it's caused by media player you are using (I do use Foobar 2000). I assume that all drivers are up to date (best way is to use system update tool).

Video freezes are probably caused by software. Have you ever tried other video players like VLC ? If yes, have you experienced similar issues ?

I do use Foobar2000 too. I noticed that while audio playback interrupts the cpu usage rise for a moment.

I think is not a software but system problem or maybe drivers but there is no newest for my SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio - 6.10.2.7255.
BTW: What is my Audio Chipset? I know it is Analog Device but which one?

To play Video I tried AllPlayer but the video quality was really poor and the problem was the same.
I've noticed that when I'm playing a video the cpu use is almost all the time 100%. The fans are turning on and off every few minutes. My PowerScheme is set then on Video Playback of'course.

This is strange because I never had problems like above on Windows XP. Maybe the Aero feature takes some resources but even when I turn it off the problems returns.

Probably I will have to go back to Win XP. O_o

Well... as I said there were no reports (at least I remember so) about such audio problems. I did use the same driver release with no probs (but finally I bought Creative PCI-E card coz I needed better quality). The audio chips in Thinkpads are really crappy!!!!

Regarding video issue.. I would recommend to remove all K-Lite codecs (incl. registry entries) and install VLC. If the problem does not disappear, we will look after system/drivers issue... video playing is CPU intensive. Maybe your CPU is overheating? Try TP Control Fan utility. It is always a good idea to use some compressed air to clean-up radiators (fistly remove palmrest and keyboard).

TPFanControl is a good idea and I have used it for long time because of issue of CPU temp. My sheme for Smart Mode 1 is:

Code: Select all

Level=50 1
Level=55 2
Level=60 3
Level=65 4
Level=70 5
Level=75 6
Level=80 7
Level=85 64
Level=90 128
In standard Power Plan mode Power Source Optimized the temperature of CPU is about 75 *C and GPU 62 *C when I'm writening this post.

I looked inside my T61 under keyboard and there is nothing to worry. Everything is clear, there should be no reason to overheating a CPU.

I have reinstalled a K-Lite Mega Codec Pack and set MPC regular with DirectShow Video WMR9 (maybe somone will know this option). Playing video isn't so bad than earlier but steel sometimes is freezing for a 1 ms. This is strange a little but I will try VLC as was suggested.

Regarding to audio I would like to by a DAC (lampucera maybe) and this should resolve the problem but I don't know when so maybe before this time the built-in audio will get better. ;)
