X31 Wireless

#1 Post by jronald » Fri Apr 09, 2010 4:04 pm

Can I use any Intel 2200 wireless card or do I need to use the IBM/Intel 2200 wireless card to keep the Centrino working correctly?

Depends on what "correctly" means...with a generic card Fn+F5 won't work, and most likely the wireless light won't either. Performance will likely be the same.

Actually, I used a generic card and didn't have a problem with the Fn+F5 key or the wireless light. Just had to run the no-1802 hack so the BIOS would allow the non-Lenovo card.

I second that; generic card in my X31 also. Although fn+F5 has never worked for me.

On ebay 'IBM-approved' wifi cards are numerous.

If you change out the wireless card I would opt for an Atheros rather than an Intel replacement - I've had X31s with both, and the Atheros seems to give less trouble with WEP and WPA setup. As with the Intel, you can get IBM designated Atheros cards, and I would think 'jronald', above, does both. I have actually replaced Intel with Atheros with no problems.
