14 inch T60 components compatible with a 15inch T60?
hello fellow padsters
what do you guys reckon.......would the parts of a 15inch T60 be compatible with those of a 14inch T60?... I mean except for the screen. My T60 is showing signs of decay and rather than buy the 3 parts that have failed I thought just buy another second hand machine and take the parts from that....and have a bunch of other parts for any future issues.
Only problem is Im in the back of beyond and I can only find a 15" T60 for sale.....the one i currently have is a 14inch.
any ideas???

I thought I saw here the boards were compatible, but there's an extender to make the connection on the optical drive. Perhaps someone with more knowledge than I can jump in here. The memory, hard drive, keyboard, optical drive, etc., would all be swappable, but anything where size matters like the palm rest for instance, would not be.

The R series notebooks have always been the poor stepchild to the T series. They're the less expensive ThinkPads for the working man/woman, who carries a lunch pail. Sadly, they are no more.devanshoom wrote:why do you call an R60 the "lunch pail"

Lesser to T and X even on this board.
There's T this, W, T that, X this, and R.A.G.Z.
(actually, A and Z were expensive in their day I believe, and Z's are pretty recent.)
And I like the look of R60! And R51.
Got my 1st R60 today, very beat up, but super cheap, may help with testing. If MB works at all, can plug T42p IDTech into it to see if will run it without having to disasemble T42p lid. Unless I find the MB is perfectly good and don't want to blow it, literally.

i have to say that the R series does look rather robust....in many ways its well suited for someone like me cos i dont carry my laptop around as such, its just sits on my desk. The R series doesnt seem to have the duff GPU issue which is nice.. I wasnt aware they had been done away with....
.....is it me or is the thinkpad line rapidly losing everything that made it so popular?...I look at the newer models and really dont feel like buying any of them....in fact Id rather buy a used high spec T60 than a new T400......its not really a money thing...more like a feeling or a notion I have in my head.

Nothing is lost, the R series will be replaced by L series.

Though very expensive, the W series has some interesting things, like switchable graphics so hopefully (I haven't researched) you can use low power, heat, noise when you want, and high for games, cad, etc. And a digitizer on palmrest, pull out extra screen, standard number keys.devanshoom wrote:.....is it me or is the thinkpad line rapidly losing everything that made it so popular?...I look at the newer models and really dont feel like buying any of them....in fact Id rather buy a used high spec T60 than a new T400......its not really a money thing...more like a feeling or a notion I have in my head.
Overall I do agree though. I have come to prefer 4:3 which is also gone... and for me it is a money thing.
I think X series can be best for use away from home, if don't have to use for extended periods of time, or have access to external monitor. X40 on ebay is so cheap now, often $100 without hard drive, and CF card and adapter can be had for about $25-$50 depending on speed and size desired for OS, maybe apps. SD slot for extra room cheap.

Just from what I've seen and I may be completely wrong here, the L looks more like the SL than the T. That's what was so great about the R series, nearly all the goodness of T series, yet lower prices. That of course provided you didn't need any of the T only options like the GPUs or WWAN.yak wrote:Nothing is lost, the R series will be replaced by L series.

My understanding is that this was true originally but recently R models were almost identical to T. The difference in price has also reduced so there was no point keeping them around, people that want R should just go for T now.FredGarvin wrote:Just from what I've seen and I may be completely wrong here, the L looks more like the SL than the T.
