Post works but a single beep and therefafter auto shutdown

#1 Post by irus » Mon Apr 12, 2010 3:27 am

i wwas getting a fan error today morning everytime i tried to power up the system. So i disassembled and found the fan to be rather difficult to move. There after i pulled it out and gave it a good scrub with a detergent and tooth brush under RO water.

In the meanwhile i pulled out the keyboard and touchpad and washed them too in the same manner. I put back everything and the fan works without errors and so is the keyboard after sufficient blow drying.

However i had forgotten to pull out the battery while cleaning the area around the GPU to remove the old arctic silver. After applying the fresh layer of AS now when i press the power on button the laptop POSTs but suddenly shuts off after 5-10 seconds after giving a single long beep, it sometimes goes upto the login screen of windows 7.

I'm not sure whats going on. is the keyboard/touchpad wet somewhere and still shorting or did i short out the circuits by not pulling out the battery while doing the above work.

Do i just wait for water to evaporate or is something screwed up for good?

Thanks for reading! Inputs will be much appreciated. :)

update: the laptop reached till the windows7 login screen where i tried to enter the password, it seems like the keyboard is screwed. It would enter two characters for one sometimes! so i rebooted it! it was stable at that point.

so the system board seems ok. however on restarting i set the bios settings to default and since then the hard disk is not showing up on the bios boot device list. IDE0: shows blank! and the hard disk is making a ticking noise!

You probably have realized by now that laptops and water are a bad combination!
If you have a port replicator or dock, remove the keyboard, hook up the dock and an external keyboard.
See if that works better.
Then go into BIOS and check the settings. Your 'defaults' in a 'sick' machine may have gone haywire.
Remove/reseat the hard disk.
Hook it up in a USB enclosure and see if you can still access it from a PC or other laptop.
Make a backup if you still can.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

fortunately i had just taken the backup yesterday.

this laptop hard disk 80gb always made ticking noises when connected via a usb enclosure for some reason. I believe it is some fault with bios settings perhaps? or hard drive firmware or a fault arising out of the combination of their interface with each other? i do have a usb keyboard lying around for any settings to be made! Maybe some security settings/passwords?

Water is not a good idea i wonder how washing a keyboard made the hard disk disappear though!

From memory of when I had to remove my keyboard, I was told to power off and then remove the battery.

Washing a keyboard is fine, provided that it is all bone dry before reassembly. If there is any doubt then wait. It is a good idea to wrap the electrical connector in clingy plastic wrap (cling-film) before washing the keyboard.
