R40 Problems
Hi all
I wonder if someone could help me out with some problems on my IBM R40 2722-BDG
1. When i turn on i cant boot from a cd/dvd drive . It seems like the drive cant be detected i know the drive works .
But it will detect a floppy disk drive and boot a floppy disk.
2. When the computer passes the IBM logo screen i get the following ,,,
Error Resource Conflict - PCI Serial Bus Controller on Motherboard Bus:02, Device:07, Function:00
Press <F1> for setup
I have to press the Escape key to load Windows . Im sure the error is related to the 1394 firewire port .
When i goto device manager the Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host controller has a yellow exclamation mark on it and it is in location PCI bus 2, device 7, function 0 .
Is there anyway i can turn of the 1394 firewire in the bios ????
Also when windows is running it will detect the floppy disk drive going in and out but will not detect my dvd rom drive and i have tried a few seems the port is working.
I have updated the bios and embedded controller to the latest versions and it made no differance.
Sorry for such a long first port ..
Thanks ..

Re: R40 Problems
Welcome to the Forum.
From your description, it sounds as if your CD drive is defective though! Have you tried it in another TP?
You can check in BIOS under the Boot category, and see if the CD is listed there.
While in there, press F9 to load the BIOS defaults, then press F10 to save/exit and reboot.
One other thing to check: your CMOS battery might be near-dead. Replace it if it measures less than 3 Volt.

Re: R40 Problems
Thanks for the welcome to this great forum ,,
I have a few IBM laptops . I have a couple if T23,s a A31 and 2 R40's. So i have a little knowledge . The dvd drive definetly works fine and i have checked a few from my other lappys. In the bios i have checked and the cd drive is listed in the boot sequence. i have also tried F9 to load default setting but still the same . I still dont understand that the floppy drive works so seems the port is working . I just tried replacing the CMOS battery and set the time and date and still same problem .. The lappy has a Pentium M 1.3 so i had found a 1.5 cpu and tried changing that and still same .. I was thinking the fault might be something to do with the Error Resource Conflict - PCI Serial Bus Controller on Motherboard Bus:02, Device:07, Function:00 .. But i cant find an option in the bios for the firewire port .
Im hoping in not the beginning of a motherboard fault as the lappy works great apart from the 2 faults...

Re: R40 Problems
Problem with the R40 is, that it was made by Acer, not IBM.
Lately a lot of problems are cropping up with R40 models....
Have you installed the Intel System drivers from IBM/Lenovo for your mobo?
Leave the drive in, then uninstal the DVD drive in Device Manager and then reboot.
It could be a driver issue.
Also try a Life Linux CD, see if you can boot from it.
And while in Device Manager, you can disable the Firewire there (in the properties).

Re: R40 Problems
I'm sorry to say that R32 and R40 machines are infamous for not seeing media drives, and that it does indicate a motherboard problem.
Having seen several of them with these issues, I'll say that I'm not certain that anyone has found the cause, let alone the cure.
The last R40 that I owned just decided to go nuts one morning, not seeing the hard or the media drives, and ended up in parts.
A wise thing to do would be to back up any important files that you might have and start seriously considering another laptop, or assigning one of your existing ones to perform functions that R40 has been this far.
Good luck.

Re: R40 Problems
Thanks for the info and advice guys .
I just cant get my head around that the floppy media drive is detected instantly and and the cd drive isnt . You would think that the media port would work or not work . And the error relating to the firewire port is wierd also because windows detects it .
I think im going to strip the full lappy down and have a good look at the motherboard if i get anywhere i will post back and let you know ..
One last think . Is there anywhere i can find out what each of the PCI devices in the bios actuall do . Can the Firewire port be turned of in bios .?? Because of the error on boot up it takes a bit of time fot the system to boot up ,,
Thanks again
