hdd ok via usb but clicks if connected directly to laptop
hdd ok via usb but clicks if connected directly to laptop
the bios is not recognising this drive in t42when connected via ide, but is recognised as a generic usb. i'm wondering what are the alternatives here.

Does a different drive works. If not, then you may have a bum IDE connector.

Few things to check:
I'm sure you know this already but make sure you're putting the HDD in upside down. Also you should feel it connecting into the pins on the IDE connector.
On start up, when you press F12 does it appear in the available drives list?
It's possible that there's an unsoldered Southbridge problem. Is the drive recognised when you press down on the SB chip (under the wi fi card at the front of the TP).
