Airline Power Adaptors Anyone Have any Experience w/ these?

#1 Post by bmoses76 » Mon Feb 28, 2005 12:30 pm

I've been researching replacing my power supply with something that can work for my T23 as I plan for a trip to Europe this summer.

Firstly, I found this nice answer from answers.google.com: http://www.answers.google.com/answers/t ... ?id=475832

It pointed me at a few products, and I've found a few on my own. I've been wondering if anyone had any experience with any of them.

iGo Juice 70
Targus PAPWR300U
APC TravelPower Case

I've also considered a seperate Mobile AC Adapter like the
CyberPower CPS140CHI
but I'd like to avoid lugging around another power brick when I go travelling. The less I have to explain to the TSA, the better.

I realize the links I provided are pretty pricy, but I'm planning on spending approximately 30 hours (15ish each way) on an airplane in a 1-2 week span. I think the money will be well spent ;)

I used the IBM branded version one trip when I was stuck in a snowstorm on the highway. Spent 7 hours watching DVD movies while all the other cars around me were going bonkers! It was probably one of the best option purchases I have made that gave me good usage.

Go with the Juice.

It is widely considered the best of the bunch and you can get tips that will fit just about everything out there.

I've used the iGo Juice 70 for some time & it's versatile & reliable. They have some newer models now you might want to check out. Even looks good. You can retire the IBM unit to do battery charger duty at home... ;)

Business Class

Generally best if you fly business class, I have found that fairly few economy seats have them.

Airline power adapter experience - iGo Juice

#7 Post by Jim » Mon Mar 07, 2005 10:42 am

I purchased an iGo Juice power supply shortly after purchasing my T42P at thinkpads.com last July. I am very satisified. It comes with a multitude of tips, one of which works with the T42P. I bought separate adapters for my Sony Clie and my Motorola T720 cellphone, as well as a 3-way connector so I can charge all three at once. I've used it on 120vac 60Hz, 240vac 50Hz, and 12 vdc in both a car and a boat. It has the airline adapter for use on American and some other airlines. While it's true that only a few economy seats have the 12 volt connectors (as posted previously), there is a great free site at http://www.seatguru.com which shows the layouts of the various aircraft models on many airlines, including the locations (if any) of power outlets. FWIW, the site provides a lot of additional information including seat spacing and seats to avoid.

I've been using the IBM DC/Air converter for years, starting way back when with my 600E.

It's been around the world several times and is now giving yeoman service with my T40.

I have an APC Auto/Air/Home universal adapter yet hardly use it because it is so heavy. I love the small size and light weight of the ThinkPad ultraportable 56W AC adapter that comes standard with the T43. When I am traveling I use a pocket inverter like one of these:

http://www.vectormfg.com/site2/vectormf ... cts_id=348

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.as ... =&cat=&s=1

On a plane if I need power I use one of these adapters with my pocket inverter:

http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?s ... c=101&sp=1

The combination works like a charm and is very light for travel. The added benefit with the small inverter is I can power / charge many small electronics such as my cell phone, bluetooth gps, etc...all with the same adapters and on top of that both parts can be had for less than $25 if you look around :)

I have a Kensington Auto/Air/AC universal adapter that works great on both my T22 and my Apple PowerBook (different tip required). I plan on using it with my T42p when it arrives.

Before I went on my trip, I bought a CyberPower 90 I think it's called that was a 90 watt power inverter for a car and it also has an airplane power adapter.

Too bad for me, my plane didn't have the power adapter.

Besides the fact, the thing works great, and it's pretty small. Plus it was like $23 shipped from Tigerdirect.com
IBM Thinkpad T23
13" Screen
384mb ram
10gig hard drive <-- in need of a bigger one ;)

I love it.
