what to do when some liquid spilled on Thinkpad?

#1 Post by zmyx » Tue Apr 13, 2010 2:59 am

Just out of curiousity... what is the correct thing to do when some liquid is spilled on Thinkpad?

I know that most Thinkpad machines are spill-resistant. I saw video clips how people pour water on the keyboard on their Thinkpad and how the liquid drained out at the bottom. However, beside removing the AC power and battery and wait for the liquid to drain out at the bottom, are there any better actions to do to prevent possible damages? for example, is it better to slip the laptop uo side down so that the liquid won't run to the mainboard by the gravity.

Once I spilled small amount of chimarrao (hot tea) on my R51 and my instinct took over my body in a flash--unplug the AC, flip the thing up side down, remove the battery. After that I wait half a day for it to dry before turn it right side up and inspect. The R51 was fine and by taking it apart there was no damage or whatsoever from the drink. Now on the second thought, could be more dangerous flipping the laptop or even tilt it on the side since the liquid could travel to the place that is not supposed to be according to the spill resistant design?

Say, if half a glass of water is spilled on the keyboard and it is already few seconds before you notice it and some liquid already coming out of the drain holes but still a lot of water is still there on the keyboard. Is it better to leave it drain out at the bottom or to flip it around so that the water can come out on the keyboard side?

I would say that if it is in the keyboard tray, leave it right side up, and let it drain, to prevent the water from getting under the motherboard.

If it is a lot of water, and you think it is under the keyboard, I would turn it off and flip it, just to get the water away from the system.

Make it a habit to NEVER have any liquid near your laptop, except in a spill-proof container.
