2.4Ghz Fans in T30, FRU 46P3132 and Ebay frustration!!!!!
2.4Ghz Fans in T30, FRU 46P3132 and Ebay frustration!!!!!
So i am planning to replace my 1.8 CPU with a 2.4Ghz chip (yeah i know they run hot, but i want to fool around with this upgrade anyway). Having scoured the forum it seems clear that the 91P8908 fan is THE fan to use with the 2.4 CPUs. So i had ordered one off EBAY.
the Ebay listing was very clear that this was a tested and used FRU 91P8908 fan, but when it finally arrived from Hong Kong today the FRU is actually 46P3132!!!! I already wrote to the seller claiming misrepresentation etc, etc, etc. However his listing states "buyer to pay return shipping" to Hong Kong which i dont plan to do (i would loose money). I wont probably know until tonight what his answer is soooooooooooo.......
QUESTION: searching the forums i see that the FRU 46P3132 fan is also known as Fan2 and some claim that it is used on CPUs rated 2.0 and higher. In the event that i can not get out of the return shipping to HK, is this fan truly suited for 2.0-2.4Ghz chips?
Is it equivalent to the 91P8908 fan?
thanks in advance

Re: 2.4Ghz Fans in T30, FRU 46P3132 and Ebay frustration!!!!!
I have read that some users find the two heatsinks identical.
I too have seen those HK fans on ebay and then I ve clicked the "US only" button on the auctions.
Myself I am upgrading to 2.0GHz as soon as the cpu arrives.
I was looking at the grill were the hot air comes out and there are 12 vertical sturdy plastic bars and two horizonal ones going across the verticals, looking slimmer, I think I am going to remove the horizontal ones to increase air throughput.
Also I have read a post here about someone using 2.6GHz P4M and 2.5Celeron with good results. The 2.2/2.4/2.6 GHz are all rated 35Watts.

yes, i think from now i also just might avoid far-east ebay sellers unless the risk/reward ratio is tempting enough.... but i suppose i should see how this plays out before making a final decission on that.
I actually ordered a 2.0 CPU also for just $6 (incl shipping!). i have been monitoring CPU temperature with my 1.8 under various conditions and i am curious to see how the 2.0 and 2.4 chips compare. My 1.8 got as high as 82C during a Microsoft Office Blue install with the fan running over 4,000rpm! this is far higher than any of my desk tops have reached but the rated max temp for a pentium 4-M is 100C so i guess this is alright.

With those crazy temperatures, have you applied thermal paste between CPU and cooler? It sounds as if not...

Actually I have not even touched the processor yet. Those hot temps were from the 1.8 cpu already in my T30 which i have owned for over 4 years now. It didnt occur to me that anyone would have replaced the CPU or fan so I naively assume that this is the 1.8 processor/fan that came with the machine. I guess i should think again!RealBlackStuff wrote:With those crazy temperatures, have you applied thermal paste between CPU and cooler? It sounds as if not...
In most cases it stays below 60C, but when i put it to work during the install (the CPU was operating at or near 100% towards the tail end of the install) it jumped up to 82C!
I will take it apart and check to see if there is any thermal paste aparant. I also have some some Arctic Silver paste kicking around, so maybe before swapping CPUs i will apply some to the 1.8 and put it through the paces just to see whats up.
there is definitely hot air blowing out of the duct and as i mentionied my hardware monitors report fan speeds over 4,000 rpm therefore it would seem that the fan is not an issue. So if my 82C temps are really that out of the ordinary for a 1.8 i guess i had better look into whether or not thermal paste had been applied.
Thanks for the input!

Given the age of T30 machines, thermal paste should be re-applied anyway.
Even for a P4M, 82 degrees is a lot.

Re: 2.4Ghz Fans in T30, FRU 46P3132 and Ebay frustration!!!!!
I understand the P/N 91P8907 / FRU 91P8908 2.4 GHz cooling system is more efficient than the P/N 46L4752 / FRU 46L4753 so the fan will rotate slower and is less noisy. I'd like to try one on my 2 GHz CPU, if I only could find a good bargain.
One vendor, ThermalFX, says it's made by Toshiba. PC-HUB lists it as MCF-206AM05 which is a Toshiba part number. However, I can't read that number from their photo. I couldn't find an MCF-206AM05 Toshiba laptop spare part nowhere. Can someone confirm it's really MCF-206AM05 (printed on the tiny round sticker on the fan motor)? Perhaps Toshiba made it exclusiveley for IBM. From what I've seen the three-point mounting appears to be unique.
I've filed a search for (91P8907,91P8908,MCF-206AM05) on eBay hoping to get one soon. For you guys over in the US I found this bargain.

From what I learnt from Ebay sellers the 2GHz fan (Fan II) is labeled
DC5V 0.3A
MCF-203AM05
IBM P/N 46L4752
FRU P/N 46L4753
EDIT: correction, see below

Re: 2.4Ghz Fans in T30, FRU 46P3132 and Ebay frustration!!!!!
Meanwhile I've got a somewhat clearer view of some of the T30 CPU fans.
"Fan I" for CPUs up to 1.8 GHz:
blue label, IBM PN/FRU 46L4752 / 46L4753, Toshiba MCF-201AM05
Fan II for the 2 GHz CPU:
orange / dark yellow label, IBM PN/FRU 46P2958 / 46P3132, Toshiba MCF-203AM05
The difference is in the spring suspension. The low power "Fan I" has a spring suspended, i.e. thermally insulated radiator. Fan II is fully spring suspended with the copper radiator being fixed thermally conductive to the aluminium case.
Unfortunately I couldn't yet get hold of a fan for the 2.4 GHz CPU for further investigations.
One more difference: part of the air stream is diverted by via a short stub of duct towards the back of the Thinkpad's case where it is blown out. May be it was intended for cooling attached gear like a docking station. My docking station, however, has no corresponding air intake. Or could it be something like an acoustic short circuit for fan noise cancellation?
At "Fan I" about 2/3 of the cross section of this exhaust is obstructed by a soft foam lining. At Fan II it's only about 1/5 of the cross section.
still wondering...

As i can remember from the days when i've tinkered with a T30 (see sig)
The 2 types of fans differ only in motor speed - and in the way the spring suspension works. The heatsink is the same (as surface) - not sure about the material. The back vent is for air intake (just guessing) - because i've neveer felt air getting out of that grille.
Furthermore - 2.0 runs ok even with Fan I - with good thermal paste applied, thoroughly clean and the axle of the fan lubed. It used to reach a maximum of 75 degrees celsius under full load.
