T60 14.1" 4:3 Motherboard Upgrade Question

#1 Post by MatheusDebull » Sat Apr 17, 2010 2:05 am

Hello everyone,

I attempted to sift through the responses on the search feature but was unable to locate the answer I need.

I recently purchased a T60 14.1" 4:3 Laptop (1953-D8U) and was thinking of upgrading the motherboard inside of it to something more powerful, with an ATI on-board video card. I saw in another forum post, the max specs you can have of a T60 laptop, but it was for the 15" lcd display (http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=86002)

Staying with T60 parts...

-T7600 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo CPU
-4GB RAM
-SSD
-ATI V5250 mobo
-abgn wifi
-WWAN adapter
-Bluetooth
-15" FlexView IPS LCD
-Custom cover paint or powdercoat

I did a search on ebay for the ATI v5250 motherboard and found out that it is for the 15" LCD, as listed, and that, of course, a 14.1" lcd will not work with it.

My question is, staying with a 14.1" lcd screen, what is the highest motherboard you can put into it?

Aside from the added benefits from a better motherboard, one of the reasons why I am looking into upgrading the motherboard is my power / battery charging indicator lights don't work but the battery still charges fine.

The T60[/p] motherboards will accept up to and including an Intel Core 2 Duo T7600 (2.33GHz) processor. All the T60/p 4:3 form factor machines use the same motherboards, regardless of the machines being 14.1" or 15".

Hmmmm.... So I can swap the 14" T60 mobo I have with the ATI X1300 into my 15" (currently X1400) machine and have a cooler GPU running my SXGA+ FlexView? At the moment the fan kicks in mainly for the GPU, (despite the fact that I've modified the heatsink) as I have the CPU undervolted quite a bit.

Although that will leave me with an X1400 powered motherboard in a 14" machine running an XGA display. I guess somebody might buy that machine for small form-factor gaming. (Well, more GPU power than your average 14" T60..)

Innerestin', thanks.
Shaun.

Yes, the 15" (non-widescren) T60 have a small extender board for UltraBay, the motherboard is exactly the same as in 14".

Take a look at this picture, you can see the extender board "doubling" all the UltraBay ports:

Why stop there?

I saw a guy selling a T60 15" with a T61 14" mother board (why? he put a QXGA screen on it, needed the 4x3 15" T60 chassis).

It did take a little work to make it fit.
