High pitched sound...
High pitched sound...
Hi everyone,
My Thinkpad T61, 14" (WXGA+), makes a silent noise.
The sound is very high, and sounds like it could be a very fast running fan.
But it also sounds like the high-frequency humming of a crt-monitor when the resolution is to high.
However, it is really not loud...
Is that normal?
And do you have andy ideas?
I still have warranty, but I am not sure whether that is a reason for it.
Looking forward to your answer,
Vilietha

Re: High pitched sound...
Hi,
For C2D processor, it's quite normal. Use the search on this forum and you'll find a dozen of topics on this matter. Also, DC/DC circuitry for battery charging/discharging sometimes tends to make high pitched noise - quite normal as well. Pull your AC\DC charger to your ear (when laptop is not connected), you should hear the same high pitched noise. Again, very normal
Cheers,
Ivan

Re: High pitched sound...
Thank you a lot!
In my case, it must be the C2D...
To make it short, is there a solution to silence the processor?
I am afraid not...
Kind regards,
Vilietha

Re: High pitched sound...
Well, some people claim that the noise goes away if you turn off the power management for the processor, since C2D only produces high pitched noise in one of its power states, but I'm not sure... Perhaps someone else can give you a better answer. Try setting the processor speed to highest in the Power manager and see if the high pitched noise goes away.
This never really bothered me, but when on battery power, I can hear my C2D make the same noise on my T60. My X60s has none (apparently CoreDuo processors don't have this problem).

Re: High pitched sound...
Same thing happens on my 14" T61, silent when on AC (even with CPU power management), but when on battery, there's a high pitched noise.jimmy274 wrote:[...]

Re: High pitched sound...
Mine makes the noise also with AC-power.
But I will try to change the frequency, thank you for the tipp

Re: High pitched sound...
Turn off CPU Power Management in the BIOS and see what happens.

Re: High pitched sound...
I did it.
It is the same. No effect...
I have the T9300 processor...

Re: High pitched sound...
Install TPFanControl, turn off fan, if high pitch disappears - it is the fan. Don't forget to turn fan back on!!! Watch out if you set TPFC to start with system - never leave it at Mode:Manual, Manual: value=0. Edit config to start as BIOS or Smart.
On both of my T60Ps it is the fan. What it sounds like? Constant-frequency impulse, 5 sec long, then 1 (or 3/4) sec pause, repeat ... The frequency ist about 15-18 kHz.
Should anybody have any idea of high quality fans fitting into T60, to replace the junk - I would be glad to test it.
