Is a SL7SM cpu (2.0 533) a plug'n play w T40p

The intel site shows it on the same page/same socket as the original cpu. I do not know if it is compatible with the machine. I'm not interested in a "might work, might crash every couple hours" sort of experiment.

This particular processor seems to be cheap on the 2nd hand market.

FSB clock rate or some more fundamental issue? What controls FSB speed - the board or the cpu? I'm not planning to hack/tweak/overclock, just curious.

K. Shopping used, wonder what else works in practice. 2 others seem to be about the same as SL7EM:
SL7V3, and SL7UZ. Are those a good alternate for SL7EM?
btw, I have a 1.6 Banias, IIRC it is rated at 24w. The faster items are rated 21. In practice are they hotter or cooler than what I've got now?

SL7V3 will work, but good luck finding one under $80-90. And the machine will run quite hot with it. I'm unfamiliar with the other one.

Honestly, even SL7EN (1.8 Dothan) would be an upgrade for your machine, and you wouldn't have to break the bank...

I'll have to check prices. All 2nd hand cpu for this machine should be cheap; one can buy a newer model T4x for maybe ?? 200 I'd guess. It's good to know what will work; sometimes one or another part shows up cheap and it's useful to know if it's possible/wise to plug it in.

I understand that you feel that parts "should" be cheaper for a T40p...guess what: they're not. The very same SL7V3 can be used in T41/p, T42/p, R50/p and R51, not to mention countless other laptops, and will always remain the most powerful 400Mhz Dothan ever made...

There's one offered in the Marketplace for $85 which is likely as good as it's going to get for this beast...
