Is it just me, or is the government (Fed & State) trying to get its hands in everything?

Tax free internet commerce in the US was a great ride while it lasted. Did anyone really think it would last forever with the greedy politicians out there?

“Tax free internet commerce in the US...” never existed. Google “use tax”.

That is a technicality because 'use tax' payments are voluntary in most states. Do you know anyone who volunteered to pay this tax? Anyway, the difference with the N. Carolina situation is that the state is trying to enforce a mandatory tax on actual past (and future) Internet sales, it is no longer a voluntary tax. But I would agree that my choice of words was not technically correct.

Where imposed, use taxes are mandatory. In Michigan, use tax has been included in the annual 1040 for a number of years. (See line 25, page 3 and taxpayer certification of http://www.michigan.gov/documents/taxes ... 5378_7.pdf )

Historically, few governments took steps to enforce the use tax. As the stakes have risen, enforcement efforts have stepped up. North Carolina is, to some extent, behind the curve. Other states have been aggressively attempting to collect use taxes from individuals for awhile.

I think we're in agreement.
