T410 Quality Issues

#1 Post by ll357355 » Fri Apr 23, 2010 10:57 am

I just got my new Thinkpad T410 a week ago

(1) left palmrest creaks a LOT
(2) LCD bezel is loose and creaks a LOT - on the top right side
(3) The Lenovo sticker on the LCD is misaliged by about 1 mm or so (not a huge deal)
(4) The box and packing it came in was LOUSY, they didn't even put a plastic wrapping around the laptop.

Just in general, I'm very unhappy with the quality.
I was going to return it, but ordering a new one or a T510 would take a number of weeks.

I called customer service, and the only other option seems to be sending it into warranty repair.

Any thoughts on the best way to handle these issues?

=====

On the positive side :)

It is very fast, with the new generation SSD that I installed.
I personally love the LCD screen (I have the discrete graphics), though some people say its not bright I think its very bright.
Keyboard is great
Looks great
It's still a Thinkpad (i guess!)

=====

Thx for listening!!!! I'm almost tempted to take a video and post it on YouTube to illustrate these issues.

Bear in mind if you do go with a T510, there is still a chance of having the left-side palm rest creek (mine does quite a bit) and the packaging is just as lousy. I don't think I've noticed a lose screen bezel or misaligned logo, though I may have just not noticed!

That T410 sounds suspiciously like a lemon, mine came in a plastic bag for the packaging. It also lacks every issue you describe:
1. What creaking
2. Seems fine except for the area above the camera, which has always been loose as there is no plastic latch there.
3. ....Sticket? Otherwise the stickers are all fine, I peeled the palmrest ones off.
4. ...Plastic bag, great simplistic packaging.

Odd, I lack all these problems that other people seem to have. But alas, here is a solution:
Go read the HMM, remove the keyboard and upper bezel, if you bought the smartcard reader, get index cards. Cut the index cards and place them ontop of the smartcard reader, reassemble and ensure every plastic latch seats.

Thanks for all the replies, I think I'm going to live with the creaking for now.

Its a tough decision for me, the problem is I will be out of country for the next 2 months or so and I need a laptop..
Im thinking I will just live with these issues and send it into Lenovo to get repaired when I return back to the states.

I really wanted to return it and get a T510 (hopefully that would have less issues).. But I would have to buy a temporary laptop for my trip then, and then all the hassle of reinstalling software etc..

its your call if you choose to accept it and let them talk you into a warranty when you are entitled to a refund IMO. Creaking and other problems aside, the notebook should come in a sealed bag. i mean a sealed bag where you have to peel a sticker off to pull the notebook out of the bag. kid of alarming imo unless they have changed their packaging methods. if they have not, to me at least, it would be totally unacceptable. you are also letting some disintersted worker talk you into the easiest path for him or for her not the best option for you which is a refund. why do you need to buy a temporary laptop when you can take your T43 with you on your trip. `

thats a smart idea and solution but come on. its like buying a new car and the muffler rattles as soon as you pull it into your garage from the dealers lot. instead of getting them to take responsibility for the defect, you take some wire and tie the muffler to the chasiss of the car to patch the rattle. this is a mercedes. does that seem reasonable?

GMK, my if I owned a Porsche and I found that Porsche somehow, with all their Germanic engineering obsession missed one little flaw on the car that didn't hinder the performance and was more of an annoyance, I would let it slide.

Last time I checked, my T43 which some people claim as a "last true Thinkpad" (Stupid, these are the same camp of people who say this about the T60, later, the T4x0s.) still has an inferior build quality and didn't like to be grabbed by the palmrest with one hand. I don't have any creaking, keyboard flex or the inability to release the Ultrabay with one hand. Perhaps there are people called "whiners", you know, the ones that never can be satisfied.

By the way, last time I checked, it *is* easier to service the T410 than to send it to EZServ. This however requires that you are also competent, unlike some of the techs at EZServ.
