A31p Dead - 2653 R3U
A31p Dead - 2653 R3U
For about six months or a year, sometimes my A31p would not start. I would get no lights when the psply is plugged in. And then the light would come on, sometimes after setting the machine on the side, or tapping it, or remove/replace battery.
Often pressing the power button would do nothing but indicate it was on when I did have a power light. I'd press the button and turn it off again, no joy. Then I found I could unplug the power supply from the TP, press the power button, the machine would often start, and I'd plug the psply in again and be good until next I had to suspend or shut down. I normally keep it docked, but it would run over an hour on either battery I have, so they aren't shot.
I shut down normally the other day and have been unable to get it to do ANYTHING. No lights, nada. I switched batteries and to another power supply, and ensured there was 16vdc from the supply.
It's six and a half years old, so not unexpected it should die, but I'd love to use it until I can get a new one. Waiting for a super deal on a W510 or T510 or something with great video and USB3.
Any thoughts on how I can resurrect it?
TIA,
Charlie
(I have another hard drive, and a USB shell I should be able to put it in to move data to a new machine when I get one.)

Give this a try:
Remove the battery, hard and media drives, unplug the AC adapter. Press the "power" button ten times in a row, holding it down for ten seconds each time and thirty seconds the last time around.
Plug the adapter - but nothing else - back in and try to power on.
Good luck.

Re: A31p Dead - 2653 R3U
Thanks, George. I tried it, but nothing happened. I just left the power adapter plugged in to see if I ever get another led to light. I wonder if there is a bad solder joint somewhere in the power cktry, based on it coming alive so many times in the past after tapping it or standing it on the side, swapping batteries. Or a bad thermal breaker.

I'm always very skeptical towards places that repair everything and anything, but that's me.
If I were you, I'd be looking for a new motherboard.
Good luck.
