T43p fan replacement. Need some advice

#1 Post by Think43p » Tue Apr 27, 2010 12:12 pm

Im about to do the fan replacement on my T43p 2668 but before I start I need some clarifications:

1. I'm using Hard disk sentinal and my laptop is pretty much fixed at 35 deg C (HDD temp) once it reaches operating temperature but I do get the low level fan noise and pretty much why Im replacing with a new fan that i got eff ebay.

Where i get confused is what fan noise is too high...sometimes I do get the high rpm sound that lasts for maybe half a minute and then goes back to lower rpm sound for most of the time.

2. I bought this laptop off IBM's refurbished site in 2008, so is there a reason to believe that they might have replaced the fan already?

3. Assuming I start to replace the fan assembly,

a. Do I need to remove a pink sheet off the heatsink on the new fan?
b. Do I still need to put thermal grease between the HS and the GPU?

4. Is it necessary to remove the bezel just to replace the fan?

Hi, welcome to the forum. If you go to the lenovo support site you can download the hardware maintenace manual for your machine. It will help you alot. You might also post you machine type and model number. It is on the bottom of your machine.
a. Do I need to remove a pink sheet off the heatsink on the new fan?
I have never seen a fan without any. So I dont have answer for you.
Do I still need to put thermal grease between the HS and the GPU?
The GPU should have a thermal pad
Is it necessary to remove the bezel just to replace the fan?
Not quite, I remove the bracket covering the pmcia slot. That allows me to pop loose just that end of the bezel. Fan removal is really pretty easy as long as the pad hasn't melted the pad to the GPU.

There several posts that talk about fan noise. It doesn't bother me for the most part because I don't hear so well anymore. There are also couple different programs that allow you to program when the fan comes on. I use one on my T41 and it works ok.
Hope this helps
Good luck

Hi, I'm also considering replacing the fan in my T43p (getting quite loud) and I would rather not buy a whole fan/heatsink assembly.

If I just buy the fan (like £30 cheaper than buying a heatsink as well), how do I remove the existing fan from the heatsink and replace it with the new fan?
