What's the display resolution of your main computer?

#1 Post by pianowizard » Wed Apr 28, 2010 1:24 pm

What's the total pixel count of your main computer? I mean just your main computer, so don't add up the pixel counts of all your computers! Do you find this resolution enough, or do you need more? If you don't have enough, what's preventing you from getting more?

I've had three 1920x1200 attached to my main computer (a Dell OptiPlex GX280 desktop) for a while, giving me a total of 6.9 MP which has been enough for almost everything that I do, but I was recently given $1,500 to buy anything computer-related, and so I was "forced" to get a Dell 3008WFP as a fourth monitor for this desktop, bringing its total pixel count to 11.0 MP! I should have all the real estate I will ever need!

1024x768 in my X31 does me well. :)

I wouldn't have minded 1400x1050, but the process for getting that in a nice 12" package is a bit expensive and time consuming for me right now.

I have a couple of 15" 1600x1200 machines, they're great, but for use as primary computer they're just too large and too loud and too much computer.

So how come I don't see a vote in the "1 - 1.999 MP" option? Did you cheat by adding up all the displays you have? LOL!

So, since there was one vote in the 2 MP range, were you going to ask me why I hadn´t posted yet? :D

Jokes aside, my main computer is the ThinkPad in my signature. I found that 1920x1200 is slightly more than I need, but then again 1680x1050 turned out to be insufficiant. I am pretty sure my next laptop will be 17''. Resolution is perfect, Windows 7 is pretty good at setting up custom DPI, I just need bigger screen. Unfortunately, I don´t have the space for an external monitor besides the laptop, and in fact I found a laptop to be more comfortable when you have to move your hands from the keyboard, with the screen attached to it, to paper... I guess 1600x1200 would also be fine, but 1920x1200 doesn´t cut from full HD movies.

I have always wondered, what do you need all that real estate for?

My main computer is currently a desktop with three 1280X1024 LCD panels connected. I may be adding a 17" CRT monitor back into that array as well.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

I'm being boring and predictable once again...1600x1200 on my T43p...as well as on my (currently disassembled) A31p...

In my ninth year of using this resolution...and not getting "itchy" for a change...

A Spinal Tap Moment?

#11 Post by bill bolton » Wed Apr 28, 2010 8:28 pm

  • Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...

Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?

    Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.

Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?

Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?

    Marty DiBergi: I don't know.

Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?

Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.

Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.

Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?

Nigel Tufnel: (pause.....) These go to eleven.

Cheers,

Bill B.

Since I like both lightweight laptops ans spacious screens my main machine is an X200 (1280x800) connected to a 2048x1152 monitor. Together it's about 3.6MP.
ThinkPad™ X201 / AFFS-120
i5-560M 2.67Ghz, 8GB RAM, Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD, Win 8 Pro 64-bit, UltraBase X200, ThinkPad Compact USB Keyboard,
Dell U2713HM (2560x1440, IPS), ExpressCard USB 3.0 (2 ports, flush), Nexus 7+10

Lol. No, not really, not anymore... But I like the high resolution because I can simply increase the DPI for the time I don´t need so much space and things still look nice on my desktop. In fact, the crispness/sharpness of the details is still preserved while things like icons and folders and similar are bigger. In particular, thumbnails look good and with some pdf or docx files one can even read the titles... :) And when I need more space for something like 3ds Max with its many windows and palets I only need to revert back to the standard DPI.

my resolution on the dx2200 (with a Sony SDM-S74 monitor) is 1280x1024, on the A31 it is 1450x1280 I believe (or something like that)
