Hi all
I just repaired my T40 replacing the hard drive, plus the recovery CDS (4).......i pulled the cover on the old hard drive, if i was to remove the disc and say find a used hard drive would that work and i would get all my info back. Only thing is finding a torx tool small enough to get it off
Hard drive disc
Re: Hard drive disc
Hello,
It's best not to open a hard drive for diagnostic purposes. I have heard and read that some people whose hard drive electronics have failed (i.e. the platters and other mechanical parts are intact) have swapped the circuit board/electronics from an identical good drive and rescued their data. Note this would not work if the drive failed because of a mechanical problem with the platters, heads, etc. This process does not entail opening the drive because the electronics are on the exterior. You would need the information from the old drive label to ensure getting an exact replacement. Best of luck.

Hi,
You need a clean room and the experience to take apart A Hard Drive. If you sratch or get any dust on the platters they will be toast.
If you can find the same model hard drive with the same circut board you may be able to get the information off of it. Recovery services will cost you big bucks, I would only do this if your information is critical.
Now you know why everyone says to backup your Hard Drive....
