My old T61 fan got fairly noisy with time but suddenly became unbearably noisy.
I removed the keyboard and I didn't see any dust buildup or obvious mechanical problem. The fan seemed to spin smoothly and didn't make any unusal noise right after the motor is stopped. So I guess the motor is shot.
Is there any point in trying to clean such a fan?
Is there a way to disassemble it and clean it without voiding the warranty?
I guess I should just call IWS and see if they refuse to take care of this grey import. I wanted to buy another laptop before trying to use the warranty but I never got around to it.

Re: cleaning T61 fan under warranty?
Hi HFat;
I have changed the 'noisey' fan in a T61p model. Its easy to do.....
If you have one of the T61 with FLEXVIEW screens - its very much worth the 'fix'
These fans are easy to get and replace ,,,,if u handy with screwdriver and can follow instructions.....You can search this forum for your topic and I am sure you see lots of pple have done this type of replacement.... and also suggested suppliers of the FAN!
Here is a link for some manual(s):

Hope this helps
Cheers

Re: cleaning T61 fan under warranty?
Thank you asumike but I'm concerned changing the fan would void the warranty. Do you know if it would?
Re: cleaning T61 fan under warranty?
Inlaw had the same unit stop working...the fan was failing and they replaced it under warranty no questions asked. Good luck.
