problem printing through usb

Hoping someone can figure this out... I have a T40 and just can't seem to print on any printer through the usb ports. Here are the facts:

parallel port works fine
USB cable and printer are fine. My wife uses them all the time. Plus, printing fails through all usb cables and all printers i've tried.
I can use the usb with my MP3 player without problem.
computer recognizes new printers/hardware without issue and installs them.

Basically, the usb seems to work. I can transfer music to my MP3 player, it recognizes new hardware, etc. But, anytime I try to print I get an error message in a bubble by the printing queue. With some printers it will print half a page and then nothing. With other printers it's just an internal error message that prints. I can't understand it.

I had the same problem with my Lexmark X75. Basically I went to the Lexmark website and installed their updated drivers. I know it sounds simple but have you updated your printer drivers?

Yes, I actually just bought a new printer. So, I have installed and re-installed the drivers to no avail. But, again, this problem happens on my old printer, printers at work, etc.., all with different brands and model #'s.

You need to install the printer driver on the usb line... turn printer off...IPL system with printer on the usb port... power on the printer... OS should see new hardware and install the printer driver on the USB port for you !!
