Memory Choice for T410S?

#1 Post by drblue » Thu May 06, 2010 4:53 am

I am ordering an additional memory for T410s. It came with one 2GB DDR3 PC3-8500 stick. It is my understanding that T410S accepts either DDR3 PC3-8500 or DDR3 PC3-10600. Which is a better option? I know that, if I use PC3-10600 in combination with PC3-8500, the speed of the faster chip will decrease to the level of the slower one. However, is there any disadvantage of using a PC3-10600 in combination with PC3-8500? If T410S support dual channel memory, I guess I am better of with buying another PC3-8500. Does T410S support dual channel memory?

Thank you for your advice.

Buy a similar stick for possibly better compatibility for dual channeling (Note: Performance increases will be in the sub-1% range in reality.) Otherwise buy the reliable module that is economical ("Cheap").

Then I'd buy another PC3-8500 stick. Buy whatever is cheapest amongst the reliable brands. Thinkpads are much less picky these days with memory.

The Crucial site indicates that T410s does not support dual channeling. This probably means that using a compatible memory stick isn't important, isn't it? The price for either module is pretty much the same (at Crucial.com), so the price is not much of an issue. Thanks.

Dual channeling your memory gives you a practical improvement of some tenth of a percentage in real life. (Read: You'll save 1 second off a 300 second job for compressing files.)

Benchmark wise, you'll be getting... Sub 10% bragging rights over other people.
