I'm pretty sure any interaction with drives hooked up through USB 2.0 incurs CPU overhead. Which is sorta why eSATA or USB 3.0 is going to replace USB 2.0.

Yup. USB devices lack the sophisticated controllers of Firewire (IEEE 1394) devices; most of the control is done through software.

On the plus side, USB 2.0 isn't as much of a security risk as Firewire...
