WiMAX-6250 4G/3G ?

#1 Post by pacco » Sat May 08, 2010 5:10 pm

Hello all,

My wife's Lenovo N100's MB died, so we get to buy a T510 ;-). (I get to spend her money). I'm trying to understand my options for use with our current Sprint broadband account, our current sprint cards are pcmcia cardbus so they won't work w/ the 510's Expresscard. I think I understand that the WiMAX-6250 will support Sprint's new 4G service, will it support their 3G? If not can anyone recommend some options? I plan to order the 510 w/ the WWAN antenna option ( why not? since it no extra charge) I'm hoping to order by tomorrow so thanks for any help. PS I'm typing this on my faithful old T41.

Cheers.

hola Pacco...

I would recommend these options:
4313CTO - T510
Genuine Windows 7 Ultimate 64
Display type: 15.6" HD+ Anti-Glare Display with LED Backlight and WWAN Antenna 1
System graphics: NVIDIA NVS 3100m Graphics with 512MB DDR3 Memory
Bluetooth: Bluetooth w/ antenna
Integrated WiFi wireless LAN adapters: Intel Centrino Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250
Integrated mobile broadband: Integrated Mobile Broadband (Gobi 2000 3G with GPS)

The rest of hardware...u can order basic (I wouldnt pay extra for anything as you can UPGREADE them cheaper that what the cost @Lenovo)

> However am not sure what you using this laptop for .. if jsut basic home/netuse etc ,,,> I recommend save your cash and order G Series or even ideapad , they just as good as "tseries' now!!!

......but than i pity the fool who takes the wifes moeny and not get her tiptop item!
Cheers ,,, >Good Luck mate:D

FYI, it is not real "4G" at all (which doesn't exist yet) that's just WiMax/Sprint marketing spin!

Thanks for the info! The laptop is for a small business and will be used on go the each day, so we're hoping the investment in a T series will pay off in reliability.

So you recommended the Gobi card, I guess it was wishful thinking on my part to think that the Wimax could support 3g.

I'm hesitant to go w/ the HD+ screen b/c of the longer wait. But I'll give that more consideration.

4G coverage is being rolled out by most PCS and other companies. They include Verizon, Clear, Comcast, Spint, and others. Checking coveage:

Coverage will get better and prices will get more competitive. Always remember they offer a 30 day trial.

hiya pacco....

hope you did order the wife;s laptop with (Gobi 2000 3G with GPS) card ,,,,,,
trsut me you (she wont) regret this extra money !!

,,,, and WHILE UNCLE BILL is very correct ,,, in 4g = 'marketing hype'! ,,,,, but then SPRINT;s also does NOT EXPLAIN to their customers what 4G is ? ..... :?:

While recently in Austin; I did manage to 'test' the 4G from Sprint via my newer W500 series on their network ,,,, YIP i can confirm its NOT USING THE 4G Bandwith as specificed (con'trary to my 'sprint Smartview said it was connected @4G speeds)
AND it wasnt any faster in 'downloads'...... :?: :?:

......so my guess is 4G (in sprints case 4G = 3G+ GPS

..... and thats what GOBI card can do !!

Cheers

R-edited to add 4G - ojectives:

Objectives

4G is being developed to accommodate the QoS and rate requirements set by further development of existing 3G applications like wireless broadband access, Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), video chat, mobile TV, but also new services like HDTV content, minimal services like voice and data, and other services that utilize bandwidth. 4G may allow roaming with wireless local area networks, and may interact with digital video broadcasting systems.

The 4G working group[clarification needed] has defined the following as objectives of the 4G wireless communication standard:

Flexible channel bandwidth, between 5 and 20 MHz, optionally up to 40 MHz.[2]
A nominal data rate of 100 Mbit/s while the client physically moves at high speeds relative to the station, and 1 Gbit/s while client and station are in relatively fixed positions as defined by the ITU-R,[8]
A data rate of at least 100 Mbit/s between any two points in the world,[8]
Peak link spectral efficiency of 15 bit/s/Hz in the downlink, and 6.75 bit/s/Hz in the uplink (meaning that 1000 Mbit/s in the downlink should be possible over less than 67 MHz bandwidth)
System spectral efficiency of up to 3 bit/s/Hz/cell in the downlink and 2.25 bit/s/Hz/cell for indoor usage.[2]
Smooth handoff across heterogeneous networks,[9]
Seamless connectivity and global roaming across multiple networks,[10]
High quality of service for next generation multimedia support (real time audio, high speed data, HDTV video content, mobile TV, etc.)[10]
Interoperability with existing wireless standards,[11] and
An all IP, packet switched network.[10]

Here's a few tidbits:

I think Sprint's Wi-Max is not 4g, but it's maybe 10x 3g:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/192146/m ... vegas.html

Kinda interesting read, but it does seem to omit the data speeds targeted for a 4g system.

http://www.sprint.com/servlet/whitepape ... an2010.pdf?

I'm still not sure what to order, for me here in Austin I think getting the WiMAX-6250 is a good plan, but it kinda adds up if I also get the Gobi 2000 3G, and I'm very suspicious as to how well they could work together, could they automatically switch b/w 3g/wimax.

Hey ausmike,

Do you have Sprint 4g(wimax) service, is that a factor in your downloads? Why do you say it's 3g +gps.... gps is from Satellite right?

That's cool you were in Austin since that's the local I'm interested in.

Thanks again.

Hiya pacco ..

Yips I have the Newer Sprint dongle - which they told me is 4G one@!@
Sicne I travel a lot... i have also the European '3G' dongle and the JAPENSE/Korea's REAL 4G (yip only so far japan& Korea - TRUE true 4g~=1Gbits/s in my testing)...> MOST of my testing is done via specific download at FIXED postion - as there is a whole different ballgame when u mobile!

Also since I have the newer W510 machine which came with the GOBI slot - which i generally use for ATT/Vodafone as a backup during travels ((another point is I dont have to fiddle with 'dongles' most of time ,,,, with things being built-in))

Best advantage of getting the GOBI - its UNLOCKED & SAME SLOT can do GSM (att & Tmobile) AND SPRINT & VERIZON- cdma/tdma etc. My pickwould be to get this now - you&your wife wont regret that extra $$ - soonmost all carriers in USA would catch up to the real 4G 'standards'.

mate - lucky u in Austin - as its the ONLY city i know that has great WIMAX and EXCELLENT signal strenght from CLEAR and its free to boot!! (seattle was ok also)

Hope this helps
(nope i dont work for Lenovo - just telling you my REAL experiances)

Wow :o , so if I have a WiMAX-6250 can I connect for free?? Sprint & CLEAR use the same service, right :?: since Sprint own's a %51 share of CLEAR. Post next time your in ATX and I'll buy you pint. I plan to order the t510 this eve and use the Mom's day 10% coupon.
