Any Nokia (Symbian) users here?

#1 Post by beGi » Sun May 09, 2010 2:21 pm

So I got new mobile phone, Nokia E55 running S60v3 OS. Couldn't be more satisfied with the phone itself, software support (and 10GB upload space for my files for free :) ) and OS.

But I can't figure out one thing, a way to import bookmarks from computer...

I was wondering if anyone here knows that ?

I'm using Skyfire and Nokia's built in browser and Firefox on my PC...

Used to have a Nokia 5500 until it finally quit after the life of being a durable phone. I wanted to get an E90 but due to its price and how terrible US providers are (3G support lacking), I went and got the US equivalent of an HTC Touch Pro (The AT&T HTC Fuze).

I do miss my 5500, it was a fairly robust and responsive OS. (Just like the original Palm Pilots were fairly robust but no multi tasking.)

I was long time Sony Ericsson user, but I must admit that S60 is really good OS, with multitasking and flash support out-of-the-box...

I just got a Nokia 6650 that uses Symbian. Still feeling my way around with it. Have you installed Nokia Ovi Suite? Perhaps once you have a connection established you can copy and paste files within the suite or by using Windows Explorer.

I have installed Ovi Suite but I'm still discovering it. I've seen sync option for bookmarks but I think it moves your mobile bookmarks to computer, but not the other way (i still need to confirm this, maybe i missed an option/setting).

Copying bookmarks from windows explorer to device is not possible, since i can't find folder on E55 to copy them...

I'll try to play around Ovi suite a bit more, but any other suggestion is welcome... :)

I was a Symbian nut for years...both UIQ and S60 flavors.

My favorite phones ever were both Symbian-based, the Sony-Ericsson M600i, and the Nokia E90. The former had to go due to a lack of EGSM/850MHz support for use in the USA...the latter was my baby for a long time, but I got sick of not having UMTS/HSPA support, so off it went in favor of an HTC Hero! Android's fun, but I do miss Symbian. If Sony-Ericsson ever felt like making another M600i, but with US HSPA support, I'd be in heaven :D

I don't know about a solution for your particular set of software, but if you are looking for a little excitement and change, I do know that both Opera Mobile on S60 and the desktop version of Opera support Opera Link, which among other things will keep bookmarks synchronized on all devices you use.

Thanks for the links qviri, I'll try that (Firefox > Opera > Mobile) and other sugestions when I get home...

EDIT: So that Opera thing worked, but although Opera UI is really nice, I find it to be as not as good as Skyfire... :(

Ovi sync...I thought that sync implies two-way communication :? It moves my bookmarks to PC, but not vice versa...

Nevertheless, new suggestions are still welcome...

Finally...

So I played with that Ovi suite (that reminds me on iTunes on PC  ) a bit more, and it turns out that after first bookmark sync, Ovi makes new mobile bookmarks folder inside bookmarks that contain bookmarks from your phone (hmmm...).

At first, I thought that it send my mobile bookmarks on PC, but the catch is that you have to copy your PC bookmarks that you want to transfer to that mobile bookmarks and sync your phone again...

That's it, your bookmarks are on your phone...

I used a Nokia E71 for about a year -- best phone I've ever owned (and I've had BlackBerries, iPhones, etc.)

Light, amazingly-durable battery, solid build, and wonderful features (fully-integrated VoIP!)

I may see about getting an E72 for my next phone. I currently have a BlackBerry 8900, and it's a toss-up as to which I like more...

I'm a huge S60 fan. I think it's ahead of its time and consistently solid. Been using S60 since 2004 in a multitude of devices

Can you guys share some favourite apps that are not OS built-in (or should I open new thread :/ ) ?

Mine are: PhoneTorch, OviMaps, BeeTag, cClock and Skyfire...

Profimail. Sadly, both of Nokia's e-mail apps are horrible, but Profimail is very, very good.

My experience is opposite, it the easiest setup I have ever seen (works out of the box for some providers), e.g only thing i had to enter for my gmail account is e-mail address and password... :)

It works fine, provided you don't want reliable push delivery.
